Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

What to expect with a promotion?

Management slept on me last year but are lining me up for a promotion next year. I'm doing the work 1-2 psg above me. My pay is in the middle of my salary range.

I got ki---d this year in pay review (3.5% merit) and I want to set clear expectations for next (if I don't land a better job).

If I'm only in the middle of my salary range at my current psg but my work is a league above, what can I expect with a promotion? Is it feasible to catch up or is this all lost cause.

You can expect somewhere around 3%-5% pay raise for a promotion, which is now separate from your annual pay raise. You won’t “catch up” because the ranges overlap so even if you move to a higher PSG, you will just have a lower compa ratio.

A promotion without some sort of managerial responsibility is a dead end at Chevron. By the time you're 40 those promotions will dry up and you'll spend the rest of your career twiddling your thumbs in CTC.

You must be new to HR. We now can expect your excellent work at a pay grade lower. Job downgraded and we will be looking for your next career advancement opportunity at next year's PDC (but you won't get it, you will just be discussed).

Great external market right now. Just leave. If they valued you, your raise would have been much higher than 3.5 and you would have gotten a promo.

Same old chevron talk. You won’t get a promotion, but they will tell you something to keep stringing you along until you finally figure out it’s all bs

If you're doing work 1-2 PSGs above your position regularly, congratulations. You have removed the business need to promote someone to fill a higher PSG position. Enjoy putting in extra effort for under-inflation pay raises.

IT had a 22% promotion rate while the rest of the company had less than 10%.

Who's actually bringing more value to the company? It's not IT!

Your clearly not going to get a promotion. Your getting strung along. Best of luck finding a new job this organization clearly does not care to keep you.

If your work is truly above your pay grade, then you should be golden on the outside. Chevron has telegraphed you that you're going nowhere fast within the organization. Start putting a shine on your resume.

Did they tell you “next year”? If they really wanted to promote you then it would have happened already. If you are not a hipot or diversity employee then you can forget about a promotion. Best to seek a job externally.

If you’re under 100% CO then you’re not getting a raise, especially if your supervisor gave you 3.5% this year. If you were under 100%, then you helped your manager have more budget for raises and he/she chose to give you the lowest amount possible. Make sure your position has room for a PSG bump. If you’re a 22 in a 20-22 job then you have to switch jobs, perform well, and then be considered for the promotion.

You should have the conversation this year about 2023. “How can I display that I am performing at the next level? What 2022 achievements would set me apart as a competitor for the next PSG?”
