Thread regarding State Farm Insurance layoffs

Why is the atmosphere so toxic?

Backstabbing.
Gossiping.
Lying.
Sinister cliques.
I’ve never adapted to a State Farm work atmosphere, and I’ve been here for over three years. The toxic atmosphere here bothers me more than anything else. Of course, there is some of that in every company, I am aware of that, but I have the worst experience here.

Really depends where you are and what job family you’re in. I spent a decade in underwriting. It was horrible. I was a USA for about 7 of those 10 years. It was extremely toxic and filled with cliques and backstabbing. Of course, back then we also barely got paid $20k a year to start and everyone acted like if they could show how great they were compared to everyone else, they’d be rewarded with an extra $500 in merit or something. Who knows why they all acted the way they did. But it was horrible and people would do everything they could to get co-workers in trouble.

I kept my head down and volunteered assignments and did my thing and eventually became an underwriter. I noticed that leaving the paraprofessional USA role behind and moving into the professional/technical family eliminated about 70-75% of the petty and toxic behavior. It was much more easy going.

I moved into IT a while ago now and I rarely see any sort of toxicity anymore. I suppose that it exists but it’s uncommon in my opinion. Of course, I am certain that people that were never in operations type environments would say that it’s terrible in IT, but they haven’t seen anything compared to what occurs regularly in other departments.

You have a conscience. Keep it because it will be the only strength you have to endure over the evil.
