Thread regarding Macy's Inc. layoffs

One Day Sales and Inventory

I’m a customer (not employee) but can I just say that your one day sales are stupid? It’s not one day if it’s every day (when is the sale not going on?) and if Macys sale prices are still way higher than every other retailer. I was there yesterday and the store was full of toys (Xmas leftovers?) and winter coats (hello, it’s February- that ship has sailed)! The area where seasonal and holiday items are normally located had a couple of valentines items and the rest of the space was filled with Xmas leftovers on clearance but still amazingly overpriced. Does Macys really think anyone will pay $50 (marked down from $160) for some flannel Xmas sheets in February? BTW, I could have bought those same sheets at homegoods in November for $30. As a consumer, I can’t understand how Macys is still in business. Every time I go there, it’s worse and worse.

Very reliable source informed me how bad Inventory was this time around. No surprise to me with all the theft going on. I’ve said this a few times already but Macys really needs to increase Asset Protection presence in these sites even smaller ones and even Neighborhood stores. Other retailers are able to do this so the results should spur action but we will see.

Over inflated prices and under paid employees

When you are a sales person at Macy’s you have to get Macy’s credit cards or bronze enrollment, make customers clients, and presell for upcoming sales events. Some, but not many other retailers, may ask you to get a credit card, but they don’t stall the checkout area to make you a client instead of a customer, and confuse you to presell what you want to buy now.

@2bpr. Unfortunately in today's retail all the retailers get kickbacks for every credit card signup they get. Customers also have been shown to spend more money when they use the retailer's credit card. This results in customers paying the higher interest charges which increases revenue to the retailer. All retail credit cards are terrible. Stay away from them. Sad but true.

OP here again - who is the marketing loser trying to get me to sign up for a credit card? Seriously, wtf?! How about focusing on being a retailer with good inventory, valued employees and reasonable prices? Stop trying to be a credit card and real estate company! That’s probably a big part of your problem — focus on your core business (You know being a place where ppl buy stuff).

If you are shopping at Macy's, then you need to be enrolled in Star Rewards. Better yet, shopping is more rewarding with Amex Red and Platinum cards. Up to 5% back on purchases outside of Macys on shopping, dining, traveling, & more. Ask any associate for details. However, you must pay your balance each month otherwise you savings will be a wash with interest & fees. When you're a savvy shopper, you know the drill. Points lead to Star Rewards in increments of $10. Star Rewards are used as payment. Use them on Specials, Deal of the Day, Last Act, BackStage purchases...so worthwhile!

What's so crazy is that Macy's Home department is so pricey (from the bedding to the blenders) and yet go into the women's department and you find $10 shirts at Style & Co.

Just shows that Macy's doesn't know if it wants to be Target or Bloomingdales.

OP here - I agree 💯 with the person who mentioned the sheets at Costco! I thought that too and bought the high thread count, Egyptian cotton sheets at Costco too! And you’re right that we can buy the same products at Walmart for a lot less money too.

To the poster who mentioned Kohl’s, you’re right and that store plays the inflated price game too. Im just one consumer, but I’m over the games.

For any business leaders from Macys who reads these posts - your inventory is junky and nothing I want in my house, even your sale prices are overpriced, your marketing is old and we notice when one day sales last more than one day bc math, and it sounds like you treat your employees pretty cr---y. BTW, when you treat your front line workers like cr-p, that affects the customer experience. The only associates I saw in your store were the ones at the make up counters and Starbucks kiosks. Your Macys employees seemed MIA and I don’t blame them!!

Thank you please send your post to Jeff Gannette directly. Someone needs to realize how bad it is with these sales and inflated prices and point it out. Give upper management a reality check. One Day Sale over 3 days is just d-mb never understood it.

Macy’s plays the same pricing games as Kohl’s. They put an unrealistic price on an item and say it on sale for 70% off. Meanwhile that is the price they intended it to be.
Funny you should mention flannel sheets. Macy’s flannel sheets are made in China and they were 60% off in October. The king set was 180.00 for 72,00 which is still high for a flannel sheet set from China.
I went to Costco and they had European flannel sheets 100% cotton made in Portugal and the king set was 39,99. The sheets are substantial and washed beautifully.
How could Macy’s put 180.00 on sheets from China that you can buy at Walmart and Costco is selling much better quality from Portugal and the real price is 39.99? Macy’s inferior sheets are still more expensive in February than the sheets I bought in October at Costco. No wonder Macy’s is going out of business.

Also don’t waste your time looking for any good quality textiles at Macy’s. It is all low end that you can buy at Walmart. Even the Hotel is now all made in India. The luxury that was once Hotel is now junk.
I was looking for a merino wool blanket and the sales associate looked at me and asked what exactly is that .
All of the blankets at Macy’s were cheap synthetics that were overpriced.
Most of their Home Store merchandise is low end and poor quality.
I went to look for a living room and was disillusioned with the poor quality. Every set of furniture was junk! It was similar to Valu-City or Big Lots. There was not one name brand selection to look at.
It is a shame that Macy’s management has taken this approach. They are going down hill quick.

Agree with the coupons. You can't really use them on too much. I appreciate the choices coming up when I pay although I dont understand why they come in my postal mail too if they are the same as what I see at checkout.
The only real sale is Friends & Family that include major brands & cosmetics. Those sales are when I buy.

And then the specials also. They are supposed to make customers happy but instead they get so mad because they can’t use their coupons on specials. Macys is d-mb. Psychology of the coupon. Don’t make specials, price them a little bit higher and let the customers use the coupons. It makes them happy. Otherwise, they get so
mad and then they always complain to me why do they send me coupons if I can’t use them? If Macys was smart, they would get rid of all these specials on one day sales and let the customers use the coupons instead on them.
