Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Unjustly PIPed

I heard that it is not uncommon that even those who have a very good performance are put on PIP here, for no good reason at all. --- Is that true?
I don't know how much to believe such stories, but I'm already a little anxious about being put on PIP.

OP, maybe you’re relatively new to EM, so you have to understand that words like “those with a very good performance” are meaningless here. To you and any normal people, “good performance” relates to useful, high-quality work, but EM is not part of the normal world, especially after the last two years.
For EM criteria on “good performance” see the comments below, no need to duplicate. Beyond the circle of HiPos with strong sponsors, it’s purely a Russian roulette. Unless of course you happen to be one of the vanishing REs, who actually have a big bull’s eye painted on their back.

Only high fliers with sponsors are immune from PIP.

I have seen some amazing technical experts PIP’d while absolute mo--ns with sponsors are kept.

Yes, worse it when your supervisors knew about all the acoomplishment but than you were represented by the manager at the ranking session, with whom you have less interactions about your job. And he/she only have 2 minutes to describe about your 1 year accomplishment.
Relative performance assessment is a joke! Just talk about it with your friends from other company, and you will realuze3how strange our system is.

That is exactly why the system is a complete joke. It is impossible for a supervisor to continuously know how you are performing relative to your rank group during the entire year. So you can be doing a good job and be getting great feedback from your supervisor all year, then all the sudden get blindsided after the relative rankings are performed. Trust me sometimes (emphasis on sometimes) the supervisor is just as blindsided as the employee.

I dropped from Outstanding to NSI in one ranking cycle……so I flipped them off and left to a competitor with a 10% pay raise + 20% bonus 😉

When there is a minimum of 5 or 8% PIP’d then even good performers end up with the PIP. So yes it is common for good performers to be PIP’d.

Welcome to the XOM Hunger Games. I’m surprised they didn’t cover this in the interview /s?

No. Need documented poor performance for PIP-hence the changes to ranking in 2020. With the new ranking process they can document poor performance from just one year and PIP.
