Once upon a time, hard work meant you'd go places at 3M. That's no longer the case and it hasn't been like that for years. We are at the point where hard work alone will get you nowhere. Instead, you have to learn to market yourself to those above you. You need to be good with your manager, his manager, and whoever else you can get in contact with. Now, you have to kiss-up to move up.

To get promoted in the technical ladder these days, you have to meet one of the two criteria below :
Meet the criteria for a diversity candidate.
Have friends in high places ( managers, TD's and higher level of management).
If you don't meet these criteria, then either you wait for eternity or you don't get promoted at all.
Rather simple rules for the technical Joe these days.
Seriously, above front line supervision positions it has been that way for a very long time.
💯
it is true, 3rd level education is a must for promotion over hard work, always will be like that,,
100% correct. This has been ongoing for a while.
Perception of your work is more important than your actual work. Good work which has low visibility will not be acknowledged.
If your project involves high profile people who are on good terms with upper management, only then the work done will get some credit.
Nepotism, favouritism, mediocrity at it's finest these days at Mother Mining. These are the hallmarks of a diseased and dying organization.
