Thread regarding IBM layoffs

Forced back in starting April

I've been working remotely for two years with no drop in productivity. Moreover, I think I was more productive than ever. The reason for the RTO is that IBM wants more clock watching, that’s without a doubt. But I don't think the company is aware of how many people will lose this way, and that they will later have to replace them with bodies just to fill a seat. Perhaps that's exactly what IBM wants?

Many of IBM's best slogans (eg. THINK) came from conversing with the throng of people standing around

So without the teeming throngs we end up with "Let's Create" and more marketing drivel.

This is just the new (and documented with recently unsealed court records) version of attrition by forced relocation - the difference is that instead of making us move hundreds of miles, we are just supposed to go back to the office. Pandemic is not over until it is over.

"The reason for the RTO is that IBM wants more clock watching..."

Hey, don't knock it! Many of IBM's best slogans (eg. THINK) came from conversing with the throng of people standing around the time clock at 4:30 PM, waiting to punch out!

IBM management definitely wants everyone back in the office and to re-establish the co-location requirement. Like it or not, IBM Management AT ALL LEVELS believe that the employees are more productive AND LESS DISTRACTED at the office.

Unfortunately, today's situation with a "CAT ON THE KEYBOARD" sending hundreds of SLACK messages to an executive slack channel followed by over 11,000 IBMers and disrupting work for all those people over a 16 minute period of time only solidifies this opinion by the management team.

In order for AK to sell the mainframe related hw,sw and ip he'll have to trim down rest of the ibm.

This guy can't trim down gts properly, let alone whole ibm except mainframe.

@1izp - Correct. If one of the hyperscalers buys IBM it will be with the express purpose of sunsetting the mainframe platform and legacy IBM software and migrating the customer base over to their cloud platform. Anyone who thinks otherwise is dreaming.

I don’t think you are correct about the named hyperscalers as mainframe would have to be a USA company if you wish to keep the govt contracts. There is a tangential advantage for any hyperscaler offering mainframe, and that is you would most likely absorb all of the intel workload over time

No doubt it will be CtlrS, TATA, Sify, or NTT. For obvious reasons.

IBM is in a slow motion downsizing. AK still has some work in front of him to get the job done. The stated goal is mainframe/enterprise engagements using Redhat/openshift to modernize legacy SW and to encourage AI. If it runs in the cloud so be it, or if it runs on prem, that’s OK too just so it runs using “enterprise” HW and SW. Remember IBM gets approx 85 - 90% of their existing revenue from “enterprise (think mainframe)” customers. AK’s current business engagement model as it sits today can’t sustain the current headcount. THUS more streamlining is in the cards. Once a sustainable headcount is established for the current business engagement model, expect IBM to be absorbed into one of the hyperscalers. NOTE there is a slight overlap of competition between the hyperscaler enterprise engagement model, and IBM’s, but it certainly is not something that will stop the absorption. IBM will end up being a wholly owned division of one of the hyperscalers with the current executive management team riding out their golden parachutes

AK is such an egotistical narcissist that he could never deal with succession. I believe he WANTS to be the last. He demands some kind of legacy.

@kam+1fSLxKFk, GR has lost all and all cards of IBM. AK is obviously powerless to return.
IBM is doomed to die.
Who will be the next after AK?

I can't figure out Management's logic. I don't think younger people will put up with it.

IBM has no clue what they want. The past 10 - 15 years have shown the executives are lost!!! GR is still a POS for the damaged she inflicted on the company and she walks away with millions. God help us all!!!
