I have no ambition to reach a managerial position at Belk. I'd rather leave this company. However, when I saw that someone mentioned that "anyone can apply for a store management position", I started wondering how difficult is it to get a store manager position here?

Don't get it wrong. This is every corporate job. Successful people see traits in those they know who show them. You can't just toil around in an average way "doing your job" and expect anybody to see anything different. You have to show some excitement and pride, and be a go-getter. Come up with ideas, pass them along, be persuasive, make a difference, be the very best at your current role, etc... but yeah, I guess it 'looks' like favoritism to the uninitiated.
It is not what you know but who know you still the best way to get a good position through networking when applying in for jobs. It is saying that often people advance based on “Nepotism” or on “Friendship”” not on whether they actually know what they are doing on the job. In my Belk store the last few years, I have seen an associate applied for Sale Team Manager position and got it. Another Sale Manager applied for Assistant Manager position and got it because she knew Store Manager in my store as friend for a long time! It is simply saying that people get ahead in life based on the inside “Connections” of who they know not based on their business skills or what they know. There is a lot of “Nepotism” at Belk anyway so go ahead and apply you never know. Good luck to you!
