It's funny how unwilling senior management is to consider input from lower-level workers - the exact people who do the work and who know exactly what needs to change and how to improve processes. There are ways to cut costs that don't involve layoffs, but they don't want to hear it. Layoffs are simpler, I guess.

+1 on managers having to prove their worth. There's a good argument that their jobs are mostly obsolete. What value do they add exactly? At best, they place arbitrary standards and requests on their directs. At worst, they end up poisoning the work culture and pushing good engineers away.
Middle management is part of what's ki----g the company. Good, independent, driven engineers are leaving because of bureaucratic managers who play the politics game are creating a toxic culture for their directs.
with covid - imho - most managers are working to prove their value add. most aren't really needed - replace them with hr - make sure you get training done, performance reviews (as we actually know we all write out own), etc
and a couple of senior director, vp for setting vision, direction. vision to some extent will come out of analytics - I can see it will be even more so in the near future.
I am actually surprised to see NetApp still in existence. Oh well, much worse companies continue to exist.
