Thread regarding Pembina Pipeline Corp layoffs

Job Offer

I have received an offer of a managerial position in the system planning group. Are things really bad as it is made to be sound here? I have until Wednesday to decide.

Congrats. I believe you made the right decision. Reading the posts here reminded me of something a former colleague of mine said when he left last summer. Paraphrasing, but essentially "Pembina made me poorer. Not because of the money but because of the expectation of always being on. Working the unnecessary hours to appear a team player, missed family events, stress that was brought home and transferred on to my wife and kids. It wasn't worth it and I don't regret it." He left for a better opportunity and I am envious of him for looking after himself. He was trashed to no end by people on our team and BU for leaving. It's a strange place..... bullet dodged OP (original poster)

Here is my long take as an employee for 12 years: Unless you are desperate, I would respectfully suggest you decline the offer. Like the person below posted, some thrive here and some are not cut out for the competitive atmosphere and culture that leans conservative and is quite regressive. Siloed teams, BUs, and field offices who are resistant to change, an appalling appetite from higher leadership to support staff with adequate systems and resources. You may be troubled that a company of this size and value can run so irresponsibly lean. Some BUs are better than others, however, again depending where you are coming from (culture/support), it may be a massive culture shock. This culture is not only tolerated from those above us but somehow bizarrely celebrated by many staff. It is very much like working for a cult that flies under the radar. I believe the posts here about the transgressions and disappointing problem behaviour were confirmed to be true by multiple people in their respective threads.

I found compensation to be very fair. "Perks" and benefits were just ok. If you value a work/life balance, I would run. There is an unwritten expectation woven into the culture that you are expected to put in 5-10+ hours of unpaid overtime each week. Every week.

Finally, I will add that Pembina is struggling to attract talent. If you are currently employed, and believe you would be a fit here, I would use this information as leverage to negotiate a superior compensation package. This goes for any prospective employees reading this.

Consider my post a row of red flags. I wish you the best with your endeavors.

Some do well some don’t. Understand you’ll have to play politics to survive. If you’re not willing to do that I’d suggest somewhere else.

Comp is ok (mid-range downtown) and the perks are good.
