Thread regarding TIAA (TIAA-CREF) layoffs

This job is unbearable

The stress of working here is ki----g me. I know, it’s high time I left this place because it's not worth it.
I just wonder how the rest of you are handling the stress here, can you relax at all?
Or perhaps only those in the highest positions can be relaxed here?

Without a doubt, they’ve been trying to see how much they can squeeze out of people. When slow days feel like a normal 8 hours of office work, any crazy days just become unbearable. An unintended consequence, I think, is that they’re going to end up with a workforce—once finally right-sized—that is so unmotivated and uncommitted to the work. People who, unlike what they’re hoping for, simply punch the clock. “It’s just another job.”

It’s a relief that others feel similarly. The culture here has become so toxic and it’s difficult to muster up the motivation to get through a work day.

“Be the change” ……I know it’s meant to be inspirational and motivational but I just dont feel it. If anything, I’m annoyed by it. When I heard that my first reaction was YOU FIRST. The way theyve treated employees over the last 1-1.5 years, dumping work like we all live to work, hs been awful. Someone in a management position said that after VSP they were slow to backfill roles because they wanted to see how much we could really handle. Found that disgusting. They claim to care about employees but I feel no sincerity in their empty messages. Theyve been promoting our mental health resources…..by this point most of us probably need it.

You’re not alone. I’ve learned to be less emotionally invested in my job. I do what I can in 8 hours and sign off……no looking back until the next business day. No sense in stressing over crazy workloads and trying to get everything done immediately…I’m only one person and it’s not worth the mental and emotional exhaustion. Maybe I’m just burnt out.

Was discussing this with a peer (Sr level) and its shifted my mindset….he said “Why should I stress out about working more or faster when the company isn’t stressed out about getting the team help or paying us competitively? Do what you can and move on. The work will be there tomorrow too.”

He’s got a fair point. My “get it all done today” work ethic didn’t prove to be advantageous in any capacity. It helped the company, sure, but I got nothing out of it. So yes, I might be a mediocre employee now, but I’m a less stressed mediocre employee and I’m ok with that.

It was, without a doubt, the worst corporate culture I have ever experienced. The level of empty rhetoric for values and integrity and blah blah blah.....management showed none. They were perfectly happy to put good employees through mental he-l with their stupid PIPs (performance improvement plans), only to fire them anyway. I never once saw a manager offer to actually HELP someone on a PIP. It's a soulless mindless place full of passive-aggressive, mediocre managers who would be parking cars at any wealth management shop that was truly world-class.

There is life outside the walls of TIAA. I hated everyday I was spending there. Left and got my soul back. The money and benefits - not worth it. Don’t let it ruin your mind, your health and your emotional well being. Once you’re gone you’ll see that place is even more messed up than you thought it was. It takes courage to make that change so I don’t say any of that lightly, but if you can find the courage to make the change, you will be happier on the other side.

There are a LOT of people at this company that feel like you do. I used to be one of them. But not I logged in with an " I refuse to allow let this job, management and my peers destroy my inner peace" attitude. I do my job for that day. Any issues for that day will be handled accordingly. No rush, no stress, no nothing!!!!!

yeah I hate them too. Very unethical HR but that would be a story for another day.
