Thread regarding Macy's Inc. layoffs

Turned full timers into part timers already

Without any sort of announcement or anything. I am a full timer who was always scheduled 5 days 35-40 hours. Since January, I have been getting scheduled 4 days and -am average of 27 hours. But today the new schedule came out and guess what they scheduled me? They scheduled me 24 hours in 4 days. Now that is just ridiculous and there is NOTHING to pick up, no shifts whatsoever. I also have medical. My average amount of hours will be reduced to 24-25 hours instead of the 35 that I usually have and to keep my benefits. This is just ridiculous. Macys is such an unethical company.

And that’s why I said I am NOT new. The new people may not know what they are but I know and they don’t know a lot anyways. I know whether I am FT or not. I’ve worked at Macys for a long time.

@2jmx Unfortunately, very common at all retailers.

I know someone who was hired as a part-timer but was working 40+ hours for most of last year because our store was so short-handed. So I suspect she was getting the FT hours without the FT benefits.

You’re absolutely wrong! There are a lot of employees working for Macy’s who have no idea if they are full, part Time, or flex. Especially if they started over the holidays

To the person who said just because I worked full time hours doesn’t mean I am a full time employee. That has to be d-mbest comment. I am not new and unfortunately I have worked for Macys over 5 years. Everyone knows whether they are part time or full time when you are hired. You pick up and advertise shifts and your PTO is all based on whether you are FT or PT. It’s even on the managers papers when you review and all sorts of stuff like that. Sounds like Macys will try to pull on you, oh no you’re not a FT employee 🙄.

Just because you were working full time hours because your store was short staffed does not mean you were a full time employee. You were lucky to be getting those hours but you’re probably actually a part time employee on paper.

@ypx You are right. We already file for unemployment and get paid for the difference in hours here in California.

The hours your we’re getting and are not getting now has to do with your base hours you were hired at. So if your store is trying to save hours they can schedule you at your base hours that is what they have to give you every week. When you were hired they should have told you what your base hours are.

I have no problem taking it or leaving it IF they had let us know about this. I only found out about it on this site when people were talking about them getting rid of full time. And I was like how will they do that and lo and behold, I see what they are doing with my scheduling and see it. It is extremely immoral and shady that Macys didn’t put out a memo about this or let us know in any way what was going to happen with our scheduling and that our hours would be cut like this. Horrible company. I shouldn’t have expected better SMH

Eventually this was going happen to all full-timers this year, either take it or leave it.

If you haven't left this terrible, terrible company yet -- why not? There is so much more out there, much better pay, better treatment, better benefits. This place is nothing more than a sinking ship. If you aren't careful, they'll take you down with it.

Thank you for the information about applying for partial unemployment. I also thought it may be temporary this scheduling us few days but it’s been 2 months already. The new schedule that came out today was for the last week of February. I am getting scheduled less and less hours every week. If it is their plan to cut full timers hours like that, they should announce it so people can make other plans and look for other jobs. It’s never been done this long before to schedule you so little hours.

Hi Everybody who is at Macy's fulltimers .I already called and went on line on the nj unemployment .If MACYS HAS YOU ALL ON FULL TIME AND PUT YOU TO PART TIME YOU CAN COLLECY THE HOURS U WERE HIRED FOR . IF MACYS HIRES U FULL TIME AND PUT U PART TIME U ABSOLUTELY CAN FILE FOR PARTIAL UNEMPLOYMENT. I ABSOLUTELY WOULD CALL YOUR HR REPRESENTATIVE AND SEE WHT THEY SAY ABOUT ANY MEMO ABOUT FULL TIMERS GOING TO PART TIME. MY THOUGHTS MAYBE ITS TEMPORARY TILL SUMMER COMES .JUST A THOUGHT. TALK TO UOUR STORE MANAGER AND SPEAJ UP AND FIND OUT. I WOULD THINK THEY WOULD GIVE U AN ANSWER U ALL DESERVE .

That’s the magic of Macy’s. They pay new hires more than current tenured employees and now the ultimate slap in the face from this unethical company they cut hours almost in half.
I have accepted another job and next week I will be out of this terrible, deceitful company.
