So....nothing actually happened. Every group I know of is short-handed and trying to hire, hard to imagine there would be a big r/a now.

Partner out means IBM will not own HW except for Z. It’s just too expensive for what it returns. Will they sell their services to consult and optimize AI. You betcha BUT owning HW is getting pushed to the partners large and small.

One big RA or a whole lot of little ones ... what's the difference? The only certainty at IBM is that Management will eventually scroow you over and fire you for no reason. Anybody who's thinking about joining IBM, don't do it ... just don't do it.

What does "partner out" mean? Either you have a public cloud or you do not. Will IBM rehost IBM Cloud on AWS?

Post ID: @4fdb+1f7UxJX8

IBM will partner out the cloud part of Intel/power/storage They will keep the Z and enterprise storage. Partnering doesn’t mean exiting, but it does mean cost shifting and letting someone else take on the commodity portion of cloud. The big players have advantage and can make a business model that helps themselves as well as letting IBM profit from it too

and/or IBM exiting the intel/power cloud game

As in shut down IBM Cloud completely? It may not be competitive with AWS/Azure/GCP but IBM's big customers are using it. Would generate lots of ill will.

These type of posts are so useless. No underlying facts, background info, etc. Just a one line statement without supporting information. Simplistic drivel.
Here's my prediction: the moon will crash into earth on 2/17, so forget about long term investing, or anything else for that matter. Same underlying logic as the OP.

The bean counters can do anything they wish as long as they follow generally approved accounting rules. SO yes they could apply the 1 billion from Watson health toward IBM’s restructuring especially considering WH is suppose to close in 2nd Q. So let’s look at the 1 billion in revenue. 1 billion divided by 300k per employee says 3.3k worth of folks are leaving with the sale IF we use the efficient number. 1 billion divided by 210k per employee says 5k worth of folks are leaving if we use the inefficient number. In addition we can apply the 1 billion toward head count reduction. Historical numbers run at a 10k per billion number. So 5k out with WH, 5k out with remaining restructuring funds (500k), and 10k out with WH re-allocated incoming sales funds. Total = 20k This just isn’t enough to call it “the big one”, and it will not change the trajectory of IBM. IBM has to lose 45-50k worth of heads given the 300k efficient revenue per employee number, so expect yet another spin-off / selloff / partnership to be announced. Current bets are Power and storage out of Infrastructure, and/or IBM exiting the intel/power cloud game

IBM’s restructuring only has approx 500 million left

Can they add the 1 billion minus costs IBM sold Watson Health?

You can easily see where IBM has to go. Re-skilling will not address IBM’s Hybrid strategy as the execs are trying to reinvent IBM, not just plod along. Just take revenue forecast for 2022 and divide it by 300k per employee. (300k is the mid point of best to worse for employee revenue over the years and has been incredibly accurate in forecasting how well IBM is doing) The math results in 183k worldwide head count. Why do I use these numbers. It’s the metrics that saved IBM in the past. They include PC revenue (commodity) and Mainframe / IBM innovative HW revenue (monopoly) PLUS proprietary OS’s and IBM developed SW. Gerstner ramped up services (body shop and consulting) which over the years has morphed into a commodity offering (spun off to Kyndryl) and consulting largely offsetting the PC revenue. The resulting math says IBM is still way over staffed and has to downsize. Re-skilling established employees to be consultants and SW developers/modernizers/Redhat experts seems a bride too far. As such IBM will raise revenue via sell offs / spin-offs of legacy operations to be able to hire the required skillsets. Keep in mind IBM is still over manned, so for every new hire coming in, expect 2 heads to leave

When you have no projects on hand the company has every right to lay you off. Yes I am taking to those who make big bucks and supposedly work from home, which equates to I am watching my kids, Netflix shows, cooking etc.At least have the decency to turn on your cameras during WebEx meetings and no we don’t want to see you in underwear or hear your I have not showered in days stories.

Nothing like a bit of scare mongering OP.

Unless you’re in some underperforming legacy tech unit, can’t see any RAs happening any time soon.

GBS has no bench, every project is short staffed, and we can't hire fast enough. No RAs happening here. Maybe on the legacy IBM Tech side.

I hate to say this, but I believe IBM’s restructuring only has approx 500 million left. (source = IBM CEO during the analyst call) Unless IBM is going to take other restructuring actions (sell off, spin off, partnership), the massacre just can’t be that big (The old metric was 10 k worth of heads per billion)
