Thread regarding University of Phoenix layoffs

How University of Phoenix Failed. It's a long story.

There are many reasons why University of Phoenix is just a shadow of what it was. Some people blame government regulation, others blame the relentless pursuit of quarterly profits and corrupt CEOs like TN. But having talked to co-founder John D. Murphy and others over the years, what I found out is that University of Phoenix began failing much earlier, when big US companies decided not to invest as much in in their workforce. UoPX is a symptom of a much larger problem: a system that cared less about workers, a system that looks at labor costs as something to be reduced rather than an investment. When that happened, many US companies stopped paying for workers to get degrees or additional training. Now our most powerful companies with workers are Amazon, Walmart, Yum Brands, McDonalds...Other powerful companies have a small number of workers--and few are unionized.

Talk about higher ed as a dirty game:

I know the person who (good for them) saw the promise of selling to the University of Phoenix almost three decades ago.

Pearson was knee-deep at UoP before anyone. They sold hundreds of millions of dollars of product to those "woefully under-prepared" students. So did Thomson and McGraw, but no one was in as early as Pearson.

Another Pearson employee was so tight with John Sperling, that they would regularly play golf with him and visit his home.

Everyone knew the grift was on. Even back then.

"After its peak in 2010, enrollment representatives were signing up people who were woefully unprepared for college work. Among national universities, UoPX is now ranked near the bottom in social mobility according to the Washington Monthly."
