Leaving AIG with a severance package would be a dream come true for me and it should be for you too. Can you imagine a better case scenario? Nobody I work with is happy at work but most are hesitant to leave for whatever reason. I keep telling them to embrace layoffs, not be petrified of them. Layoffs mean freedom with short-term financial security. It doesn't get much better than that.

It is all about your individual situation. But there are opportunities out there, if you are good at what you do, you will be a rock star somewhere else!!
Being laid off was the best thing that ever happened to me last year, huge weight lifted off my shoulders and over 8 months severance. F R E E D O M!!!!!!
That's not true. I asked for one and was told no.
If you want a severance package ask for one. You might be surprised by the answer you get.
I pray for layoff everyday
I think it just means you can’t coast until retirement perhaps like you thought. We may have to think outside the box, embrace change, get up skilled while you are working, leverage your contacts, etc.
I’m in similar position, but I guess I’m strange because I don’t mind working if it is meaningful work. That’s my biggest problem, not seeing or hearing a road map of anything except milestones that allow senior executives to get their huge bonuses before they walk out the door.
I will wait until STI is paid out, and probably move on to something different. I will miss my team and business partners I have worked with, but I will not miss the lack of real leadership.
Layoffs are great if you are close to retirement, or young enough to transition quickly to a new job. It is not so great for the people that need about 5 more years to retirement, have decent salary, and need to work to pay for medical benefits. It will be hard for those people to find a job paying comparable salary and benefits (if at all).
