Thread regarding Allstate Corp. layoffs

Why was it worth working at Allstate?

Of course, I would never repeat this experience. Now that I intend to give notice I wonder if there were any positive things at all in staying here for for so long.
Yes, there were positive things such as

  • now I finally know what I definitely don't want
  • and after I leave I can only get better,
  • also I met some great people here.

All in all, after the experience at Allstate, everyone learns to respect themselves a little more.

left allstate in 2019--was in a ca office(roseville) 34 yrs at that time...when i started allstate had sears discounts.good benefits,a good pension plan and decent activities...xmas parties, meetings w/meals/drinks,awards for claim excellence , etc..was decent... then around 2010 it seemed as if everyone with tenure was looked on as a problem in claims...every yr was a budget yr..raises were now 1 % if you walked on water. metrics took over and got more absurd. at 1 point we had a metric that 0 justified complaint occurrences was a meets...how would someone get an exceeds under that lunacy? but i had an awesome office and i am still proud of my ex coworkers that hung in there til they shut our doors . things posted here on what is going on with company is tough to read as i still have soft spot for the good days at the big A

36 years and was laid off in 2020. Still haven't found a job that is worth it. Allstate ruined my retirement - I had 8 more years to go.

Hey, going on 36 years and will retire in two more years. All those years have been in claims. This job has allowed me to retire comfortably in two more years. Do I care if they lay me off now or in the future? Not really. But that's just because of time/place and situation. If I was 10 years or more younger then yeah I would be singing a different tune.
Everyone's situation is different.

Yes, it isn't all that great lately due to many things. And yes, I look forward to doing something else, but there isn't anything out there right now that is paying me what I'm getting paid and that gives me 8 weeks of paid time off. Ge-z, I even decided to buy an extra week of PTO this year for the first time ever because one more week off was a heck of a lot better than having to put up with some of the s..t going on these days.

But that gives me basically 9 weeks of vacation. Name another company that is going to give that to you? Most jobs give you one or two weeks vacation. Yes, I know they cut the PTO to most people but didn't take it away for the more tenured. Everything that was good is being slowly and now quickly eroding away. That includes the pension plan which they torpedoed in 2014. They even .. quietly changed the profit sharing plan this year and I can't even tell for sure how it will affect the amount that it was to what is now. But as it is with everything else, any change to a benefit is never for the better of the employee.

The job and company used to be a good thing. It remains that for me but only because of my own situation. I'm not sure that anyone that is in their 40's can the say the same thing because it isn't a stable work environment and the amount of work expected drives everyone insane if they let it. If looking forward to 15 or 20 more years of the same was what I had to look forward to then I would probably move on now and be gone. Have seen many people leave this year and decided to bail. Believe that can be attributed mostly, I believe to the present work environment.

I'm grateful and will miss many of my co-workers (very few of those are upper management). Mixed emotions about it all but no question looking forward to the end as I don't see things getting better.

I have to say, compared to some of the places I've worked, Allstate isn't that bad. It's far from perfect, but I'm no longer on call 24/7 or suffering through a lack of organization like some other tech shops I've been with.

If you're in claims or some of those front line departments, I can imagine it sucks, but that is also the way I'd imagine all insurance companies to be like to some degree.

I have been with allstate for several years but outside of 2020 with the mass layoffs it hasn't been that bad
