Thread regarding Norfolk Southern Corp. layoffs

NS needs to hire more people ASAP!

However, who wants to work here when they hear how much mandatory overtime needs to be done here... Nobody! Everyone's free time is invaluable, you can't put a price on it. How much overtime do you do on regular basis?
For months now, I have not spent any time with family and friends. Due to miserable pay, this company has consumed my life totally. I apologize for venting a bit here, but I'm really sick of it all. I’d most rather refuse to do so much overtime, but I guess I’d be automatically fired. People are leaving because they can no longer keep up with that pace. Do they have to lose even the workers they already have just because they are incapable of hiring more people that this company desperately needs?

It’s not going to get better. The carrier isn’t going to make conditions any better.

The minute Hedge Funds became involved in our nations infrastructure was the beginning of the end . They have destroyed an industry…The very industry that supplies all our basic needs . Trucks only carry the load so far …

They have furloughed their workforce with the thought of “ They always come back it’s the railroad “ This isn’t happening. New Hires are put on jobs with seasoned conductors to be told the truth about the railroad . The new hires we have had at my location quit within a month . Yet they brag about record profits , the food court , gym and daycare at the new corporate headquarters . Transportation has been working without a contract for years … This company continually lies to federal regulators on several issues daily . “We are trying to resolve this man power shortage “ All the while using Covid as an excuse “We cut several jobs and furloughed another six employees “ The operating ratio is amazing and the dividends are through the roof …

It would be fun to see this company in oh sh-t mode as more people keep quitting. Sucks for the ones left, more work more overtime more stupidly..

Seven years sooner retirement if you have 360 months credit. That is becoming harder and harder to get with these clowns in charge. If I had 20 years in already, I would probably try to stick it out. For the new hires, I can't even begin to imagine what it would be like.

Maybe because taxes and medical are nowhere near 1/2. Closer to 1/3rd. The medical is far better and cheaper at NS than at most places, the retirement is up to 7 1/2 years sooner with full benefits than with Social Security and you pay taxes with any employer except under the table work, so that wouldn’t save you anything.

If you work at NS you know why you do it. You have good reasons. Anybody else would have those same reasons.

Why would anybody want to work for a company that makes everyone work on Christmas? 3rd shift with Tuesday and Wednesday off? just because they pay $30.00 an hour? half of that pays taxes and medical. it is no longer the best job in town.

It was an emergency and they asked one guy to work over a few hours one time and the union didn’t like it so now it’s a war on “Forced” Overtime.

Wake up, overtime on non-union gigs is "voluntary" but most employers will write you up and or replace you if you refuse enough "voluntary" OT.

When a mechanic retires the carrier calls back the most recently furloughed. A lot of people turn down Furlough Relief positions, but most are coming back for regular positions. For all the BS, NS is still the best game in town.

Mechanical forces are their Achilles heel. That is why they have cut them to the bone and eliminated many shop jobs. I dont think they will continue laying off, however I do believe that anyone lost thru attrition, IE: retires, quits, goes out on disability or gets fired, they will not replace the job. That way they can continue to reduce forces to where they feel they need them.

They aren't going to hire in mechanical I don't believe. They will run 1 person to death doing a 3 man job. NS is ranked the 2nd worst employer in the country. UP is #1

Nope typical Class One motto. Do more with less. He-l they keep throwing more responsibilities on us for the same lowsy pay. Not like our spineless unions can strike. This is how the railroads will phase out the unions, it will always get worse. Don't kid yourself thinking next contract will be any better. Sh--s been going down hill since I started in 2008.

Supervision might claim they can force you to work overtime, but it’s really your choice so if you want to stay or go is up to you. Just say “NO” and accept the consequences, they probably won’t fire you. The worst they are likely to do is put a letter in your file. Maybe give you time on the street to catch up with family and friends.

You all are making your lives miserable by enabling this culture. Look around... not everyone puts up with it. They leave on time. They're happier. Just saying.

I hope they burn to the ground. If everyone had any sense, they would just walk away and watch the sh-t show go down in flames. Let's see if they can run a railroad with just their managers
