Thread regarding Shell Oil layoffs

Too many managers

Sometimes it doesn't bother me and sometimes it's very frustrating. There are too many managers here and very few leaders among them. Do we really need to have all these managers?

The person who became my manager was someone that I worked with for 15 years prior to their promotion. I can honestly say they were the worst employee out of our group, didn't really give a rat's tail about the job, or coworkers, constantly bashed management, and looked for other employment, because in their eyes, the job sucked! Then, one day a manager from another location put the bug in their ear, saying "do you want to be an employee for the rest of your career, or do you want to be the boss"? This other manager provided guidance, and spoke well on their behalf to higher ups, and eventually they became a manager! The problem with this scenario is this person knows all the "tricks, and shortcuts" of everyone else, and used that to their advantage, to start disciplining their former coworkers, causing some to quit, and some to be terminated, all for doing some of the same things done in the past by the new boss! This only created a toxic work environment and seemed to be a source of enjoyment for the newly minted manager. Anyone that becomes a manager should be transferred to another location, and not be able to supervise their former coworkers. That is the exact reason why I retired
3 years earlier than planned, but in the end it all worked out.

Most of the managers have not done any real work anyway. They get promoted through friends who also haven't done real work. This is why Shell is in real trouble. It's at the top and all the way down.

Shell’s management mantra is “leading through others” or better yet- “accomplishing work through others.” In other words we promote managers who have neither the experience or ability to step up when things go south.

Good technical workers try to move to teams with good leaders, but it's hard to stay ahead of incompetent management. Reshape forced people to apply to jobs without knowing who the boss would be. Surprise! You get the team lead with 11 years at Shell.
