Thread regarding University of Phoenix layoffs

Time to go...

UOPX was a great dream and idea by Dr. Sperling, but like all great things greed ultimately damaged it.

Today's Phoenix is being run by the business development and employer relations leaders who believe they can convince employers and their employees to attend the university while receiving some discounted tuition and fees savings. They are doing this to circumvent the 85/15 or 90/10 funding thresholds, which essentially means that little or no student loans would be used for a student's education.

The problem with this is that they continue to move away from onsite campus services and support for their most vulnerable students: students Dr. Sperling was trying to serve. Additionally, commencement ceremonies, which are a big deal for those that were the first to go and graduate from college in their families, have become more centralized or virtual (before COVID) and the educational product (courses) have been diminished due to faculty leaving because of low pay and limited classes to teach.

With more than 60% of their student never graduating and a high majority of those that are really under-educated when compared to public institutions via industry testing standards, I would think really hard on whether you just want the credential or are you seeking an education that will enhance your career opportunities. The university will argue that they have very successful grads, but when you have over a 1 million alumni, the odds are you will find exceptions. For the record, I am not a disgruntled student or employee. I have just seen this first-hand and it's time to speak the truth most of those that work there have expressed openly to their leaders.

Ask yourself or someone with relevant industry whether you could truly learn a topic well enough in a five week course? Phoenix will argue that the instructional hours are there, but when you factor in the first class ramp up time and the last fifth week class, which includes a final or final project presentation, does anyone actually believe that 3 or even 4 weeks of classes is enough?

That’s why you have to consider whether or not the degree from the school is actually enough to be considered legit. As an employer I would say that wouldn’t be enough for me.

The first Ponzi scheme was based on match boxes.
Not people's futures.
