Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Exxon does not negotiate salary

Exxon does not negotiate salary. They make you an offer, and you take it or leave it. This has been the case for as long as anyone I know at the company has been there.

People who are planning to join XOM need to know this. I know plenty of companies are open to negotiating pay, but this is not one of them. If the number you got is not what you've hoped for, move on.

How many of you negotiated more than a 3% pay raise this year. Entry salaries are negotiable especially for experienced hires. Fresh from college, there is almost no negotiating range. ONCE you are ranked, LIMITED negotiating range with your supervisor. If you dropped in ranking, ZERO negotiating room. Lesson: if you want a pay raise, you must quit and negotiate elsewhere. That is especially true if you are in bottom half. Other companies will likely see your degree and XOM experience as worthwhile and you can negotiate to a top third salary.

I negotiated and got an extra 20%. Life is all about negotiation and those of you that think it’s isn’t are living in the shadows.

IT is really not core to EM.

To get the salary you want you would need to hire on to a core EM function as an experienced hire with ‘in demand’ proven skills; otherwise, you are not much more than a number working a cost center. Sorry.

Not always true.

At 49 years of age, I joined EM as an experienced hire. As an engineer, I had 20 years of international deepwater well construction experience with BP when I hired on with EM. I declined the first EM offer and they came back with another 15%. I took the offer, worked for EM for 15 years and retired at the age of 64. My EM sup asked me to continue working but 35 years in the oil field was enough for me

It was a good run. The pay was good and the work was great. And, I liked working only every other month. Very nice schedule indeed.

My EM experience was mostly all good but I believe things have changed since I left.

Good luck to all.

@OP With what just happened in Baytown (not as unusual as it should be), Exxon would have to give me at least $500,000/year to work for them. Even then I might not take the job.

Not true. Experienced hire here. Was offered and I countered with a 28% increase. We settled on 15% increase in the original. Was a good offer.

One thing that irked me was them only recognizing 10 of 18 years of experience. Now it'll take me another 10 years to get the next week of vacation. I didn't plan on being here that long and you can't take all vacation each year with the staffing levels anyways.

I just needed this salary bump to leverage into my next company stop in a couple years.

@mev There’s not that many anymore. They’ve shrunk the S&D org so much that there’s effectively noone in charge of careers anymore.

That’s how BTC jobs are offered, it’s almost a threatening tone where HR tells the potential new or experienced hires that the salary is not up for even a discussion….
XOM comes across like we are the premier employer, those days are long gone…

Maybe things have changed, but as a new hire geoscientist in 2009, i successfully negotiated my salary with XOM. They upped the salary about 6%z

@guf+1erEOqTc
But what would the 100s of S&D managers do?

There is no need for IT top talent In ExxonMobil.
And yes, the current ExxonMobil does negotiate CL and salary for experienced hires. OP is wrong.
This is NOT the EM we knew. This is now DW’s “also run” little company.

experienced hires do negotiate, I did. All depends on hiring manager. Other benefits are set in stone.

I think as external, you can try to negotiate. If they really want you, the hiring manager might go extra mile to fight for you, so that you can be classified in higher CL with higher salary.
The chance is low though, as most managers will only take HR recommendation and blame HR if applicants turned down the offer.

And they dont allow a current employee to view available internal job openings. Like so 19th century. Control baby...control.

Yep. It's a ridiculous, short-sighted, arrogant stance. It absolutely prevents them from ever attracting top IT talent.
