Thread regarding Citigroup Inc. / Citibank / Citi layoffs

It's terribly hard to grow a career here

At least from my perspective, it's hard to grow a career here. Since it is important for me to progress and I can't do that here no matter how hard I try, I am thinking more and more about leaving. I’d love to hear from those who think differently, do they perhaps have some constructive advice and tips on how to make progress in this company?

My take is to either accept it, grow or move on. Simple as that.

Ever thought your also competing against those same young, ambitious and highly educated candidates that may just have the competitive edge over you and not some old uneducated manager that would feel threatened by your presence?

Perhaps look inward and ask your current manager to be honest with you on what you need to do to develop. You may just find out your not the sharpest tool in the shed and others that are getting the promotions are simply just beating you out.

I have not had this experience. I started in servicing on the phone 7 years ago and have went from a c04 to a b11 since that time increased my salary tremendously. I did this by accepting feedback, volunteering for projects, accepting additional work, becoming a SME and sharing with my peers. Get involved with the mentor program and grow your network. In my business channel almost all if the C14 promotions last year were internal within our business group.

You are right. There’s a lot of old time managers at Citi who are threatened by the younger and highly educated work force. If you aren’t having any luck, I recommend you leave Citi and go to another company that values education and experience over who you know or don’t know. Im dealing with the same issue and Im currently looking to leave.

You first need to define the words “grow a career here”.
Do you mean raise up in the ranks to manager? Grow technically in the same technology? Grow technically in a different technology? Move within Citi to a different field altogether? Are you defining “grow” as in more money? Can you elaborate some?
