Thread regarding Imperial Oil Limited layoffs

Results after failing PIP?

Results after failing PIP?

  • consider being layoff and receive severance pay?
  • consider being fired, no severance and no EI?

Anyone knows? Thanks

PIP is just the legwork to claim they provided you an opportunity to improve. This reduces the likelihood of them being litigated for wrongful dismissal. Based on my observations there is a set number annually who get PIP’d and then waxed at the next go around. As others have stated, use the time to scout other roles and actively apply towards the end of the timeline detailed in your PIP. This will allow you time to find a role and defer your start date accordingly to milk the slimy SOBs for some cash when you are already leaving. I think the payout depends on your age and time in the saddle, but certainly exceeds the statutory minimums. They will try to entice you to take a payout for your pension contributions but just leave it in so they have to pay more out later. Otherwise it will just be ported to a locked in rrsp you have to pay management fees on till your 65 anyway. I found imperial oil to be utterly soul destroying. No creativity or latitude to operate in your role, just mindless scripted work you clock in and out on in a cubicle counting down the hours to home time. I think this is why they want new grad EITs who are bedazzled by a seemingly large salary and have no idea what kind of opportunity and growth there is in other organizations. Bouncing around every two years in various roles as a generalist is not of value anywhere but there. That said, there are those who claim to love it there. So to each their own I suppose. I personally think they are full of it. Who wants to sit on their bu-t all day in a call centre style environment having to bs, and p-o on their coworkers in hopes of out performing them in a rigged review process. Not what you know, it’s who you blow. Narcissistic cess pool too. Gross

It all depends on how old you are and years of service.

  • If you NRE with 5 years. Start looking fue another job. Do minimum work to fail the PIP so you can take some money with you and move on to another job.
  • the ones in the worse situation are >50 years old and <10 years of service. Bad spot to be. Some very hard decisions to make.

You can collect Canada EI as long as you don’t quit or are wrongfully fired. Got check the Canada government site for details.

The best option would be to allow them to lay you off. You will get a severance package and be eligible for EI. Use the PIP period to look for a job.
