Two questions:
Is there a non-compete for exiting employees?
How many weeks notice should I give?

I gave 2 weeks. To my surprise, they asked if I wanted to work the 2 weeks or just leave that day. I stayed the 2 weeks to organize files for someone to pick up the work in the future. The group was so short staffed that there wasn't anyone to pick up the work
XOM is arrogant enough to claim it's the best of the best, so it does not have any non-compete. So go ahead to jump ship to CVX or Shell, no problem. You can start there tomorrow.
@OP Non-compete agreements are nearly impossible to enforce below the executive level, so they’re rarely applied to anyone except for a departing senior executive. They can include a sizable severance and/or a requirement to pay the executive’s salary for the length of the agreement. So, no, unless there’s a capital “C” in your job title. A non-disclosure agreement is a totally different animal (don’t ever sign one without consulting an attorney).
You shouldn’t give any notice when leaving. Arrange your references in advance, take your PTO, and quit the day it ends.
Long time ago when companies more or less respect their employees: two weeks. Now, wherever wants you to give those crooks. If it was me and have the opportunity to work next Monday. None.
I'm planning to give only a few days come January.
Some folks aren't even giving two weeks! Regardless of time, it takes the corporation over 6 months to fill any openings externally so they'll likely shuffle someone into it if it's critical
It depends. 2 weeks.
