I’m QUITTING & I cannot WAIT to be done with this miserable place. In my 20 years of retail, I have absolutely never worked in a worse environment. Too many opinions being thrown out about what things should look like. You end up doing the same project 4 times over. Don’t get me started on everyone acting like seals performing in a circus when the “walks” happen with upper management. The OVMs spend more time TALKING about what needs to be done than actually doing ANYTHING. Management teams are shaddddyyyyy!!!! Trust No One. Colleagues asked for more pay. They are gonna get it- along with a lot more work and more expectations even though they can barely keep up with the workload as is. Just a horrible horrible horrible place to work. Get TF out. It’s only going to get worse.

It is true, Macy’s is a terrible place to work. But it’s retail and any job where you have to deal with the public is terrible. There are plenty of other places to work. Macy’s is below working at McDonald’s at this point.
When it comes to Macy’s expect the unexpected. Just when you think things are going well they will do something to disappoint you. Doing well in a location they will propose to move you to a different store further from your home. Either because of higher volume and they need help or some other reason. My advice is keep looking elsewhere and if possible try to find something that is not retail. Yes you do meet and work with a lot of great people over the years but you have to consider your future plans and take care of that first.
Thinking about taking a job at Macy's, then consider that in the last 10 year the company has suspended increases for colleagues for three years, meaning no raise at all in these years because didn't make its sales plan. The only tool that this leadership team has in its tool box in bad years is layoff hammer and every person (including executives) looks like a nail . The company is very comfortable with eliminating jobs, raises, and has ever declining benefits that cost more every year.
Even when the company is doing well, leadership chooses options like paying extra on weekends instead of increasing wages, even when competitors pay more and ask much less from their employees. Consider that instead of raising starting rates to $15 so that stores would have enough help this holiday season, we chose to announce that we would give raises in May of next year thinking that the promise of a raise in seven months would be the cheapest possible way to get people to stay instead of actually giving them a raise when every other employer is paying more.
There is little in the way of development and career growth that don't require you to relocated around the county and even then the best you can hope for is to be store manager for larger and more stressful locations with an expectation that you do little else in your life other then invest all of your energies in Macy's.
There are better options out there that don't take so much from you and have much better long term outlooks. We are closing another 10 stores next year which will mean another 800+ people out of jobs.
Anybody that is still at Macy’s and not seriously looking for other opportunities with companies that care about their employees needs to wake up.
As usual Macys is chasing the train to hire seasonal employees at the last minute. Other retailers tackled This issue by offering better wages and incentives back in August. Anybody that wanted a retail job already has it.
Other retailers didn’t sc--w their existing employees by offering more money to new seasonal hires. Other retailers didn’t lie to their employees about salaries the way Macy’s is.
There will be a major shakeup come February and many full time employees will either receive ongoing reduced hours or be eliminated totally. You know how Macy’s operates this is an annual event. They want to minimize full timers and replace them with part timers with no benefit’s. Macy’s doesn’t care about their loyal long term people.
I left this mess last year and it was the best decision in my life. I am at Costco and what a difference. No crazy hours, holidays off and a decent salary with great benefits and raises after six months.
The way Macy’s handled seasonal hiring this year says it all. Macy’s senior management has no clue as to how the stores operate. And have no idea how to treat their employees fairly. There needs to be a clean sweep at the top management levels of this one time leader of the retail world. It is sad to look back at Macy’s storied history and see what is left of it today.
