Thread regarding Walmart layoffs

Walmart asking Biden to call in the National Guard?

Biden: “Well, I had a timetable to—first of all, I want to get the ports up and running, and get the railroads and the rail heads and the trucks in port ready to move. Because I’ve gotten Walmart and others that say, ‘We’re going to move stuff off of the port, into our warehouses.’”

Cooper: “ So, are you—but you’re actually talking about having National Guardsmen and women driving trucks?”

Biden: “The answer is: Yes, if we can’t move the—increase the number of truckers, which we’re in the process of doing…”

There might be a succession issue with young people not wanting to be truckers. But that’s not the current problem. There’s thousands of trucks waiting at the ports (go see the videos on YouTube) and once inside the Walmart network, Walmart has a private fleet of trucks and contractor trucking already under contract. The supply chains greatest weakness is the ports and the speed and manner goods get offloaded and eventually get on a truck to go somewhere. Once a truck finally leaves for a final destination or distribution center it is literally weeks now. What used to take 2 weeks is now taking 8-10. So shelves are starting to look empty because of normal buying, but replenishment is not happening. Therefore we have shortages, inflation and panic buying.

It’s actually not the labor unions.

The issue is young people don’t want to go into trucking. Everyone keeps talking about autonomous cars and trucks, so young people are scared to start a career that might not be around for long.

Couple that with the baby boomers retiring at a higher rate than expected through the pandemic and there’s your problem.

Actually, that is true. Walmart has a ton of space ready to accept goods.

Well, if things get worse, maybe he should get trained and certified CDL National Guard personnel to help. I mean, he royally screwed the pooch on this one. But it’s not the trucking/transportation piece of the supply chain that is broken. The ports are mis-managed and labor unions are manipulating the entire flow. Walmart has plenty of warehouse space ready.
