Anyone accepted a promotion into a management position that they regretted? What was the difference in stress levels and functions? Most of all, was the increase in salary worth it? Were you treated differently by your coworkers because of the promotion? I have the opportunity but I am unsure if it’s worth the headaches that will probably come.

I accepted a management position over the MST team and stepped back down ten months later. It was all consuming and the stress was unimaginable. You will be asked to do things that are physically not possible within the time frames expected, you yourself will have to make up for any shortcomings of your team/department, and yes, the relationship with your previous peers changes dramatically. You will then have to be wary of not only management but your team as well. The pay increase was nice BUT absolutely not worth the stress, the additional hours you'll HAVE to work or the change in attitudes from everyone you work with. In my instance, I felt like my day was never over. The issues and stress followed me home every night. Good luck with your decision and the following outcome.
I did the calculation when I was a Department Manager and there was no way, I would become assistant manager. I actively made sure they didn’t promote me. When they said they were doing away with the Department manager position I quit. It was bad enough they had understaffed my department, they denied my department assistance stocking freight, even though the store manager denied doing it he was ratted out by his own assistants. Then after I left, as the train wreck was happening, one of my friends that was also a DM got a new job with a competitor and raided the store of every decent employee possible.
The store manager is no longer an employee.
Was one of the top 3 Pse in company and left Oct 2019…no definitely money is not worth the lack of family life.
I’m in management and I can tell you that it is not worth it in any way. The job is straightforward but what they don’t tell you is the constant pressure and interference by senior management especially the district level staff.
The company evidently thinks that management by threat is how they want to run the place. Think I’m exaggerating? All my manger does is forward emails from the district manager who threatens everyone else with “accountability” if the targets aren’t met. Oh, the district level staff loves “accountability”, for everyone else, not them. It’s pure fun having these people constantly threatening your job and writing everyone up. Of course they don’t do it themselves. They get the ASMs to do that.
Just remember that if you step up into management, your going to be spending a lot of time being told that you’re not performing to standards and being “held accountable” for everyone in your department(s). You’ll be given lots of extra tasks that have nothing to do with your job because the ASMs don’t want to do them and every single sc--w up in the store will be yours to fix. Yeah, being a manager is a ton of fun.
I was promoted to dept supervisor, was extremely stressful. I did that for a yr and a half. Also got roped into p51 at the last minute, for 6 weeks of overnights, because the person who was supposed to do it decided they couldn't do it. Nearly cost me my marriage. Now I'm a head cashier. Decent pay and A LOT less stress and a better schedule. It's a good place to work, you just have to maneuver into the right position. I've been working here for 13 yrs
I did. Went from DS to ASM. Totally was not worth it. The small pay raise that I did get was cancelled out by the longer hours that I had to work. It’s a headache job. You will have no life outside of work and will have to come in on your off days. You will basically be on call 24/7. The only way I would encourage anyone to take a promotion like that is if your career aspiration is to be a store manager or higher in a retail environment.
