Which Offer Should I Take? BP vs Oxy

I recently graduated with my MSc in Reservoir Engineering after getting a BSc in Petroleum Engineering. I was able to interview and receive an offer from both BP and Oxy. Similar positions (Res Eng) but BP offers $3K/year more salary, 10% target bonus, and a $10K signing bonus. Oxy offers 15% target bonus and no signing bonus.

Obviously the short-term money is better at BP but I'm nervous about the future of the company and me being there long-term. The BP CEO has openly stated they want to move away from oil to focus on wind and solar and also plan to decrease oil production 40% by the end of the decade which aren't very comforting to hear. Any thoughts from current/former employees on which offer I should take and why?

Thanks in advance!

Why would you not go with BP? If you need to talk with a psychiatrist there are many in Houston.

Really, you have to decide between the lesser of two evils. Oxy is floundering. BP is moving away from oil (and has been, since Macondo). That has created a noxious, back-stabbing environment amongst its O&G people. Many of them, like rats on a sinking ship, are now masquerading as 'carbon sequestration' experts. Take a few years of BP training (which Oxy can't offer) then try to find greener pastures (no pun intended).

BP, they have a better training program for early careers, and if you get laid off in the future you have a better chance at finding another job among midsize companies like Oxy. Oxy has a bad reputation overall so hiring personnel from other companies are not as impressed if you come from Oxy, but much more impressed if you come from a major (BP, Chevron, ExxonMobile, ConocoPhillips).

Oxy is horrible, HR blows and leadership makes everything confusing and difficult. Go with BP

You should take neither. Why would you go into this industry? If you don’t mind going thru layoffs every two - three years then stay in oil and gas. Big mistake.

Neither. Get a job at a smaller independent oil company that calls where you work an office instead of a campus and has a personnel department instead of a Human Resources organization. You'll do real work and get real experience unless you really like making power point slides, endless non productive meetings, deep dives, stale management and training courses to make you think the right way. Big oil co.'s are in a controlled demolition right now. Good luck!

Your decision depends on how you are oriented. Are you oriented towards using your brain in a research capacity or just cranking out the backup for the next package of wells? Since you didn’t give your university name it is hard to see where you fit. But given what we know of where Oxy recruits( basically limited to the Texas area)
I would say you fit at Oxy rather then a company that hires real technical thinkers. Sorry for a reality check but that is the way it is.

Yea, Karma Troll is a total hypocrite and attacking people he doesn't even know is all that remains of his Oxy career. But he does hold the record for most deleted posts on this site, so he’s a winner at something.

Are you kidding?? On this site “it’s actually 'attack anyone who defends the company based on facts and evidence, but don't provide any meaningful defense other than pathetic name calling' Its quite catchy.”

What facts and what evidence? Anything current or just 20 year old stuff?

Oxy, hands down. I worked at BP before coming to Oxy. BP used to be great to work for, but it got progressively worse, and is still getting worse according my friends over at BP with whom I still am in contact. Oxy sucked when I first joined but it progressively is getting better. OXY’s vision is awesome and is heading the right direction. It’s hard work, but I get recognized and rewarded here. I would never go back to BP, which is a sinking ship heading towards the Bermuda Triangle. I’m with Oxy for the long haul and plan on retiring here at Oxy. Oh by the way, you get every other Friday off here at Oxy. At BP, you do not. That itself is a huge advantage of Oxy over BP.

In BP you will be one of hundreds of reservoir engineers. You will have more opportunities and chances to stand out at Oxy.

Does anyone else see the irony of asking on layoff.com about working here?

Come to Oxy, as a RE your job a year ago could have been with the Regulatory or Accounting departments, so get exposure to other departments where some Petrotechs are still there.

Having worked here and BP, it’s true, flip a coin. There is no green grass unless you are on a foreign/expatriate job.

Flip a coin, where you start is not where you will end, you won’t be spending an entire career at either company. Those days are gone.
