Thread regarding Macy's Inc. layoffs

Upcoming Reestructure

Changes in the horizon

  • OVMs eliminated (Tenured OVMs to be placed in Director level jobs) Everyone else will go back to a restructured sales manager role.
  • New Manager role in which each sales manager now has to merchandise their own department, same as visual (MTM, VM and CSX merge). Have to cover the floor as well (Open and close)
  • Support team will work same schedule as sales colleagues. Scheduled 15 minutes before store opens and leave 15-45 minutes after store closes. This should help with colleague presence on the floor to help customers as well.
  • Ops and Receiving no info yet.
  • Spring 2022 or 2023 ( Still being tested as many people will leave, due to change in hours and responsibilities)

Take with a grain of salt

Some of this sounds like the pilot that a lot of the stores are already doing.

We have several departments that almost never have a sales associate to ring out customers.
Central checkout will be good for customers so that they don’t have to walk around in and out of departments looking for a place to make a purchase.

Eventually it's going to happen right after inventory. Start the new fiscal year with a bang. 💥 🙉

Wow! I can't believe it! Our store in South Texas is not ready for this change. The border bridges will open on November 8th, we can't handle the local shoppers and the Mexican shoppers.

“This will never work. You can’t sign sales, do markdowns, and merchandise everything while the store is open especially with such limited support team”

It will work and has worked for nearly a year in test locations. And it will be rolled to all in spring 2022.
As a red badge I am annoyed by support colleagues who come in wearing sweats and AirPods pushing around a signing cart and claiming “I don’t know” to every customer question or interaction. Or the ole “I don’t work on the sales floor you need to ask someone else”

Ummm if you don’t work on the sales floor what are you doing literally working on it? If you do not want customer interactions retail is not for you. There is no magical 6-3pm with no customer interaction anymore. World has changed and so has retail. Don't like it? Find something else more suited to your needs. Less people means doing things different and being on the floor to assist a customer while doing other tasks. It’s called multi tasking.
At the end of the day none of us would be employed without customers coming in and purchasing.

Retired red badge here.....if this is true, then the company is going back to a revised structure that was in place 30 years ago where the Sales Manager did almost everything in their department.....unpacking new receipts, merchandising the sales floor, setting and signing sales, and markdowns......I did ALL this.....was a RTW manager for years....I learned a ton, and the skills that were learned were valuable for the rest of my career.....yes, it is alot of work, spent 10 plus hours a day on the sales floor.....there was always something to do. I loved it......but many sales managers will not.

This has been alluded to all this year during visits and from store managers and it makes sense.

Receiving/Fufilment/AYS would report to the MBA. The expansion of this role this year has shown where that manager role is headed.

For Focus businesses (W.Shoes, Big Ticket, Beauty,BackStage, Fine Jewelry) CSX there are in charge of the whole process from truck being put away. markdowns, setting sales, etc...
So no large change.

Some have multiple focus businesses and with elimination of OVM (if true) and more managers on the floor perhaps each CSX would only have 1 business to run.
The biggest change would be to apparel CSX's . I could see OVMs being put there in RTW and Mens

Comment below about Support setting sales before store opens...Jewelry sets their own sale during the day while business is happening and usually starts the evening before a few hours before closing. It can be done we have been doing it down there for years and it is set by the selling associates and clerical

Also they are rolling out a register consolidation project to combine more clusters of registers together with bigger bays one per floor.
You would have people zoned as cashiers and the rest of the team zoned to the floor, doing markdowns, setting sale and assisting customers.

You pick up a ringing shift or you pick up a sales floor tasking shift, that is how sales/support combines. We were literally told this was going to happen in my neck of the woods.

If you did not know this was coming you are blind or do not have a store manager who has been transparent with you since Q2 for upcoming changes in Spring 2022. The only part of this I was unaware of was the OVM elimination and expansion/redesign of the CSX role.

I am nobody in the "know" I just am not blind and can see the writing on the wall.
