Thread regarding Occidental Petroleum Corp. layoffs

People who make everyone know about their work

At first, I was annoyed by the person who made sure that everyone knew about everything he did, no matter how minimal it was. I think people like that put more effort into publicizing these daily “achievements” of theirs than into the work itself. And then I realized, no matter how childish and unnecessary it may seem, such people are more valued in this company than those who work much harder, but are they silent about it?

In a similar vein, I've never been in technical presentation at Oxy that didn't end with "Great job!" or "Awesome presentation!" or "Excellent analysis!" even when the work presented was subpar, misleading, confusing, or just plain wrong.

I suspect all the APC acquisition strategy meetings ended that way too.

The millennials like to give a lot of “kudos” to each other for just doing their jobs. Seems odd and excessive. Something the boomers aren’t all that comfortable with.

HR does not have any power in determining promotions. In this case they just fill out the paperwork.

@7png is mostly right except HR is also very involved. At least that’s how it works at Oxy. I used to be part of the process.

Don’t know who has been telling you stories, but the previous poster is right. No board or committee, just management approval. Been thru it many times. It’s different for those in the C suite, as BOD is involved.

This process happens but the board only consists of a limited number of people; your boss, your bosses boss, and your functional chiefs. If you are doing great work, you are ready to tackle the work of the next grade level, and the functional chiefs like you then .you may get recommended for a promotion in the next two years.

This happens at the majors and a large US independent that was acquired by OXY. I imagine some of the acquired DNA resides in the HR department@OXY.

@6trp, man, that sounds old school and requires so much work. When I played sports growing up I got a trophy whether we won or lost. My mom always told me “good job” after I did anything. I’m not looking to demonstrate my worth to the company, the company needs to prove they love me with promotions and generous bonuses.

As I moved up the technical path and the company deemed me a "business asset" , all promotions went through a career talent board consisting of 20 members (managers and VP's) from across the company. It took a unanimous vote from the board to send your name forward to the SVP for final approval. The moral to this is that you need to be visible not just within your business unit but at a broad company level. For me that took a variety of work assignments, presentations of my work at a company level, mentoring,representing the company to competitors and government officials,etc. It also starts with doing good work and having your peers and immediate bosses know and like what you do.
Promotability is also a function of opportunity and timing. Careers soar when you can be part of something successful early. Being known for your skill sets can serve you well to be considered for these roles.

You are correct. Without making the bosses know how valuable you are promotions will not happen. There is nothing wrong with this as long as you deserve it and your approach is professional.

Nothing new about this. 37 years in the business, my promotability was not always based on how much grease I found but my ability to showcase my abilities within the business units and to the management/executive. This allowed my career to move forward as a much quicker pace than quietly working hard in my office and hoping to be noticed / rewarded by my boss. I received a large promotion by having our competitor see me in action and give positive feedback to my management. Doesn't seem right but saw this work many times during my career.

If you actually accomplish something of real significance you can’t advertise it anywhere that o bros would look. The real stuff stands out to much, you wouldn’t be “anonymous” anymore.

However, it would make public that at least your not apart the normal douche canoe full of a-s kisses

There are people who blow their own horns who also give back to their coworkers. They are the ones who deserve the promotions into management as long as they are technically competent.
