Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

How many years it takes to move to next level?

Based on your experience, how many years it takes to move from 6A to 7B and then from 7B to 7A?

The website is about layoffs. Why are we talking about getting promotions?

To the OP below, the subject of this thread is promotions and how to jump from lower pay bands to higher pay bands. My comment about jumping ships every 6 months assumes you are after higher comp.

But by all means quit and move if you feel not valued and disrespected by management.

PS- I am a millennial myself and not part of management.

"Now please don’t do the young millenial/Gen Z BS by jumping companies every 6 months"

Spoken like management who are trying to go back to the days where you didn't have to respect employees. Wolves in sheeps clothing. One thing I learned at General Motors is things don't get better and people aren't going to all of the sudden become nice. If you are not respected, leave, regardless of timeframe.

The best way to get more money is by applying and interviewing for roles that you are qualified for outside of GM. Do this every 3-4 years and you will get nice results.

Now please don’t do the young millenial/Gen Z BS by jumping companies every 6 months to a year because you will eventually be labeled a job hopper.

Depends on a lot of factors. The quickest way to move up a level Ive seen is to apply for a new position that is a level up. Generally want to have some time in before doing that. The downside is if you get a bump in level fast you may not get the bump in pay that typically goes with a level increase.

The other approach is to keep doing a good job in your present role. From what i’ve seen it takes about 5 years to get a bump this way and you’ll usually get a nice pay increase along with it. (7-10%)

I had my boss, then their boss, talk me out of taking a promotion. I eventually took a lateral move to get away from my coworkers' unacceptable behavior. I was laid off shortly thereafter.

Depends. If you have the right culture, less than 2 years. If your are competent , hard working, want to do the right thing, and don't play politics.........never.
