Tips to get promoted

Asking for tips to get promoted. I heard at least 5 years in one GL to move to the next one, is that true? I am willing to do whatever to get the move to next level.

If you really want to advance your career, the time-tested method to get promoted into a higher position is to switch companies.

Actually if you have integrity in how you work and deal with others please don’t deviate from this. If something needs to be pointed out don’t be afraid to do so even if it is not the political answer. The executives need to be able to trust people. You want supervisors, managers, directors, and executives to say you are reliable and they can trust you. They may overrule you but at least they are getting honesty. You are paid to be honest and don’t forget that.

The company looks out for itself. Start there.

You can literally be a maybe in technical and financial categories and move up assuming your the right kind of person. Most of the people getting promoted there are pretty lazy in terms of work but carry on well with peers and management. Sharpen your people skills and don’t rock the boat even if it’s the right thing to do.

Remember, in terms of this company, your interviewing either against or with the weatherman from Ron Burgundies team on Anchorman.

Go to a smaller company where the president knows you and your abilities enough to ask meaningful questions about your project.

kiss a$$ my child, kiss a$$. scheduling some golf time with senior folks definitely on sundays and brunching with the female ones on saturdays. another way is to take credit for most of the work the team does. making it look like my own made me outshine the hardworking others. helps to be a dude.

No it’s not true. It’s who you know and who you are friends with. Sorry. I know from personal experience and friends that play the game. Doesn’t matter how hard you work.

Learn to play the politics as they are everywhere at oxy. Once I learned to navigate the political bs I got promoted several times.

I could be wrong but I think @iog+ never got promoted. Just guessing.

Bigotry, incompetence, denying facts and the Oxy track record, bullying, pettiness and a can't do attitude will get you straight to the top at Oxy.

Good point on starting the conversation. There is normally a 1-2 year delay because of the system. A good boss knows who should be promoted but sometimes they need a gentle reminder.

Make sure your boss and his/her boss knows how much value you generate for the company. Ask for special assignments once you have demonstrated that you can do the job. Always follow through with what you say you are going to do. Don’t BS people. Be honest. Be a good listener in meetings. The list goes on and on around a common theme of being a good hard working honest person and professional worker.

Time in GL doesn’t matter. Find out from your manager what skills are required for your current GL and for the next GL. Then, develop your skills to exceed your current GL.
