Thread regarding Sabre Holdings layoffs

Making employees happy without spending a dime

Some ideas about making employees happy without spending a dime:

  • Give us back MLK day please! MLK day is a very inconvenient day to take a holiday. It is in January, most people are just back from long break. Nowhere to go, nothing much to do. Please give us that day back and add it to the floating holidays!!!
  • Allow us to move 5 days of vacation to next year. Please, do not say the cr---y message "we want everyone to use their vacation time". We will use it! But next year. It is not too late. There won't be anyone to work in December this year. I personally don't have many days left and will be working, but there won't even be anyone to do code reviews!
  • Please please please remove this stupid "normal distribution" for DPMs. If I have 10 very best engineers in the world, I cannot mark one as "lazy id--t". No lazy id--ts are left after 25 layoffs!!! And my engineers are top ones!

The following will cost Sabre a bit $$, but not much:

  • Make the year-end holiday permanent. I usually work at those days, and believe me, nobody really "works". Even people with no vacation time left do not even login. I personally saw this (and hated it. But what can you do?)
  • Increase the HSA contribution back to $1000. Some upper manager (we all guess her name and hate) updated this to $700 from $1000 a few years ago. Even make it $1040 so we will have a nice round number per paycheck.

Before MLK day was made holiday, we had 3 floating days off. Then it was reduced to 2 and MLK was added as a holiday. It will be fabolous if we go back to 3 floating holidays.

@7elf+1dMJIdfL // But, the OP is making the point that "MLK Day" is bad timing. Go back to having the previous holiday schedule (Presidents' Day was a holiday?) instead of the current one where MLK Day is a holiday. Besides, JMMVHO, but MLK would be embarrassed to have a holiday in his honor.

I think Black Friday should be declared a global holiday so we can all shop. Looks like there are no ratings to be given on DPMs this year which is interesting. You are right, any outstanding employee should be rated as such, even if your whole team are outstanding. If they arnt, then the manager is at fault

I agree with only one of your points - rating employees on a bell curve defeats the purpose of performance assessments. The forced ranking demotivates employees as it does not reflect actual performance. The comparison of the employees becomes highly subjective rather than objective. The manager has to come up with an under-performer and a high-performer even in teams with no under or high-performers.
