When I hear from friends who work in competing companies, I wonder if I’m complaining too much about the situation here? I don't want to sound like a cheerleader, I've wanted to get out of here for a long time, but now I'm thinking the situation is probably not much better with the competitors either. Any thoughts?

Depends on the competitor. Some are worse different ways. But I have never seen the level of dysfunctional politics play out at TIAA’s level. That is some dog eat dog right there!
I started to think this way but changed my mind after speaking with a couple of headhunters last week. It’s awful here but it sounds like our competitors might be a little less awful (optimistic, I know). I’ve started to entertain some phone calls from competitors and some of them are offering very competitive pay and surprisingly high sign on bonuses (and full remote). Do what’s right for you but keep your eyes open at the same time.
This is the only reason I didn't take VSP. Everything I hate about TIAA is the same or worse everywhere else.
This is true. I spoke to someone in a similar company and the things I mention, I'm am told it's literally the same at his company. I personally think people have to do what is right for them.
