A serious discrimination lawsuit is allegedly a brewin’.
A former belk store manager is allegedly claiming they were instructed to “overwork” certain older employees in hopes they would quit. they are also allegedly claiming that Belk is hiring and promoting people based on physical characteristics and not based on qualifications, merit, or ability. The manager is also allegedly claiming that charity day practices are questionable and some money from that event is unaccounted for. It will be interesting to see where this goes.

You act like there's something wrong with that? The whining and complaining is all tied to whether or not there is the possibility of layoffs or store closures. If you want to censure people, go to The Steve Hoffman Forums or Stereo Central. Those places are loaded with people tossing insults and judgements back-n-forth.

This site is the only place to find out what is going on with belk. And it's true that they overwork people that they are trying to push out. It's happening to me and has been for quite awhile. Our store is a joke. And I have news for belk I will leave when and if I am ready. Yes, I have hated the job for awhile now. Not all of us are ignorant to your aggressive practices and I do have an exit strategy but it will be my choice. For all the billions of dollars that sycamore has what a bunch of stupid people.

Overworking certain associates started about a year ago. Belk does not seem to be trying to hide this either. As a manager, I was told who to overwork and who not to overwork, when I questioned this, I was reprimanded. That’s when I knew it was time to leave. Another concern that I addressed was that scheduling was inconsistent and erratic, (example), the store manager was allowed to work a shorter shift than hourly employees, take major sale and every single weekends off, have tons of paid time off that was never denied even when everyone else’s was denied for no valid reason,, and only work until 4 or 5pm. I was told this was a “perk” of being a store manager, however, our store was consistently missing sales goals and metrics and was down considerably to LLY according to the RVP. So why was this being allowed? Shouldn’t the store manager be present to make sure the store is reaching its goals? None of these questions were addressed or answered. When I gave my notice, I was asked to stay, offered a small raise, then asked if I would be interested in a sales associate position (I laughed at that one),, none of which I accepted, as I realized this company is desperate and clings to anyone who is willing to stay and work for these unreasonable people. I would suggest that if you feel you are being targeted for age, race, gender, or any other reason, start looking for a new career path, any company that blatantly practices these things is not a company a good employee wants to work for. Flowtown Belk still had those chargeplate validators until we gutted the Customer Service area and trashed everything, including the old PA system, to wall it in and make a teeny-mini area for online order shipping.

Everything in that list of accusations, apart from the charity day shenanigans which have plagued Belk since the family sold it, is true of any modern workplace.
Pretty young women with great teeth, fine legs and huge tatas are gonna get more opportunity than older, unattractive women with saggy dumplings, crow's feet, baggy knees and Lucille Ball wigs.
Young, strong, Alpha-males with broad, Hollywood-quality smiles, commanding voices and, you guessed it, that shaved-all-round-the-sides-with-a-fade haircut with the longer swirl of hair on top that looks like a soft-serve yogurt ice cream cone-- THEY are gonna get the management positions. Not the old duffers who have been there for years, with the paunches, bald spots, turkey necks, rubber legs and white tail hairs.
Even when the younger crowd does absolutely nothing, they look great doing it! That cannot be denied! So, that's how that works. Remember: The younger you are and the better you look, the more you'll see.

Just more BS of Belk discrimination. If all the posts on this site about this topic were accurate Belk would’ve been gone a long time ago. Corporate companies protect themselves very well in this day.

How is he planning to support his claims? Most likely those instructions were verbal. I can’t imagine he has any financial documentation about charity sale practice. Sycamore’s lawyers will destroy him, it will never make to court.
