Thread regarding Allstate Corp. layoffs

Be careful of remote work and your future

Be careful of remote work and your future, if it can be done remotely it can be done anywhere. I was laid off last year, 20 years with company previous 3 years were remote. There are lots of things to love about remote but it is bad for a career. You really lose how to communicate one on one and bounce ideas off each other. My new job gave me option to work from home but I learn so much and network a lot better in an office. My opinion, but if you have a “job”, work from home. If you want a career get into an office and work side by side with humans. Zoom and IM are not the same as in person meetings. My opinion and I am sure others will feel differently.

Bumped from @rrn+1cYjoQhU. This should be read by more people, especially those considering going remote.

I'm remote...would take a buyout tomorrow. For me, not because I dont enjoy my job. I just want to retire with the extra severance package..so for my personal experience...hope you are right.

Good riddance to the office. I don't miss commuting and I love the fact I can live literally anywhere (warm weather here I come!). Besides, most of my coworkers are as-----s, do nothing to miss,

I think covid has changed the workforce. Now to stay competitive many companies know they have to offer work from home opportunities. Personally, for me I think hybrid is the best. I don't want to come to the office 5 days a week not do I want to work from home 5 days a week and miss socializing with coworkers and working in person as a team. I like the flexibility to go to the office maybe 2 or 3 times a week and alternatively stay home 2 or 3 days a week. If you like remote working I encourage it. Personally for me I get cabin fever and want to go out and be around people sometimes even though I'm introverted

It may be a risk but it’s better than commuting 1-2 hours a day, sitting in a miserable cubicle , listening to you babble about your weekend, etc. I’m super productive at home and have saved tons of money since going remote. No more real estate expenses, utility bills, etc for Allstate either. It’s actually a win for employees and Allstate

Remote work is the new fad and companies are pushing that as far as they can right now. I think it really depends on the job, the person, their home situation, etc. as to whether it'll work or not. For example, I dislike working remotely all week just as much as I dislike going to the office 5-days a week, but for different reasons obviously. Anyway, we're all part of this experiment whether we like it or not and it will continue to change and evolve. Allstate will continue to follow whatever is trending (we follow, we don't lead) and saves them the most money. Worry about finding a good job that is satisfying for you, whatever that means. Good luck!

So is the thought that 80% remote workers is now the operating model regardless of Covid and other external influences?

In person, day to day in an office is SO much better.

Correction: maybe remote workers at THIS company need to worry because Allstate doesn’t pay anything and just ships all careers over to India anyways. 🤷🏻‍♀️

All other companies that care about their employees or don’t outsource, no. The world has changed since the pandemic.

Then 80% of employees are in trouble! :) Most people are working remote and Allstate is having a tough time hiring and retaining. I don't think we need to worry too much about it. I understand your point and believe it was valid a few years back, but things have really changed across the country in terms of how people work.
