ExxonMobil Managers - Glorified Information Brokers

The more time I spend here, the more I realize that the majority of managers I've worked with/for or otherwise observed are just glorified information brokers; collecting information, updates, accomplishments, details, etc. from those they rule over so they can use it to their advantage. Whether it is taking credit for the the work of subordinates when they had little to no involvement, or making it look like they are valiantly leading out in various aspects of their organization's daily work (which they usually aren't), these selfish, egotistical, megalomaniacs contribute almost nothing substantial or meaningful to their organizations, the company, or the people they supposedly "manage". They just gather information, dress it up in a way that makes them look good to their higher-ups or other snake-whispering peers, and pass it on via PowerPoint, unnecessary meeting, or time-wasting email. Most of the time, the people from whom they're sucking information out of never know why they're doing it, or what they intend to do with it.

This might describe most of corporate though. The middle management bloat isn’t necessarily unique to EM.

Same everywhere in EM. SLS are note takers from management dictators, FLS are the message runners reciting the message verbatim and running back to their nest.

OP well done!
Dude this commentary is true and precise for any ExxonMobil organization. Each and every. I vouch for our Upstream org management to be nothing but glorified information brokers (traffickers have better value)

You must be working in Annandale, possibly in PPLE.

When I was at the HC, my co-worker did the same with me and others. We were all engineers and nobody was in management. Guess he was working on his skills.

Maybe he will make it into management some day. Hope so, since he made a lousy engineer!

Also true for some senior technical persons / advisors that are actually selected by management
