Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

Why do CVX managers feel so threatened?

I came here thinking I'd be able to advance my career but so far that hasn't happened. I'm yet to meet a manager here who is not threatened by somebody who knows how to do their job well and who is driven. Instead of helping me, they're making sure I stay exactly where I am. I'm being promotion-blocked by my boss because he sees me as competition. I expected better from this place.

The guy that used the word "WOKE", people who bandy about the word woke are really just white priveledged wankers like Carlson on Phucked News and quite a few people at Chevron.

The only managers who feel threatened are the ones who aren't high pots, who haven't been informed of their next five promotions.

Because white males in a woke culture have a lot to feel threatened about.

This generation of managers feels "threatened" because they were thrust into their jobs with insufficient experience and training. Chevron is a wonderful place to get a wealth of experience (not promotions!), so take advantage of that while planning your next job somewhere else. Work your network (mostly external), make sure people outside the company recognize your name (papers, presentations, committees, local society organizations), then you'll have no problem shifting to a job where you're valued.

If we weren’t so concerned about our next role every 6 months maybe we could get some sh$t accomplished. Back stabbing is encouraged and this woke BS is running off anyone with morales. Oh, better do your white privilege training so you can learn how to shut up and be a wallflower. After all, according to the CDIO, you are the reason every non-white doesn’t want to return to the office.

They are threatened because they know they aren’t capable of doing their job, let alone mine, and try so hard to hide it at everyone else’s expense.

Managers are like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get.

What is even more messed up is that these same managers are on selection teams and in the PDC where they abuse their power even more.

I've had one or two good managers at Chevron that really cared about my development.

I've had a few @$$holes, space cadets, and people with too many direct reports to even know what was going on. Some were micromanagers, some hands-off. The hands-off manager is the one I received a promotion while on their team. The remainder couldn't or wouldn't fight for me.

Sadly, I'm at the point where I no longer care about promotions or career ladder. I'm old enough where I am just bidding my time. If I can make it another 4 years, I'll be out of here.

I really couldn't fathom surviving here for 10, much less 14 more years. It's getting way too woke, and while I have always viewed and treated everyone as equals, it's only a matter of time before I commit a micro-aggression (probably nano-aggression soon) and find myself in an environment that hates me, and I'll soon grow to hate. They say that travel opens one's mind up, and it has, but I'm not going to virtue signal to prove something when half of these folks would be scared sh1tless to visit the facilities I have. I've met and bonded with people because of shared situation that I consider family now. I'm rather sad that I'll never be able to see them again because of changes in travel and company policy.

Being a team lead or manager here is a thankless job, and post-transformation it thanks you even less. My friends here in management are looking for individual contributor jobs because they've found that it is not the role they thought they wanted. Unfortunately some managers are afraid to lose good talent and would rather impact someone's advance because of their own selfish need to look good than have to deal with backfilling a role. Sad. Best of luck.
