Thread regarding Walmart layoffs

Transfer

Hello everyone! This is not any layoff news. Just needed some advice and I didn’t know where else to ask Walmart employees.

My mother wants to move a fair distance away from where she is now. She’s been at Walmart for almost a decade now and asked for a transfer to a Walmart in the new area. She was told she has to wait 6 months, and if she tries to go before 6 months she forfeits her job and time with the company.

Now this Walmart has done some really messed up things to my mother and I don’t know if she should trust that. She is so nice and believes them. But, sometimes I worry that they’re lying to keep her there so they don’t have to replace her yet.

Additionally, my now husband used to work for Sams Club 4 hours from me. And when I got pregnant his transfer to a store closer to me was within weeks. I don’t know if they follow different rules than Walmart stores though.

So, does anyone happen to know, officially, if that’s true? If you are moving hours away and want to transfer to a new store closer to that location, do you HAVE to wait 6 months?

Thank you.

I hope it worked out for your mother. I was with Sam's over 18 years, put in for transfer to a Walmart in the area I was moving over 2 hours away. Text with management at that Walmart. Once I got move here went to store, the manager then told me no taking transfers. I've applied so many times when job openings come up for that store, got one meet and greet that I wasn't able to do. Went to store talked to GM he had opening, told him that would be good he said he'd let her know, but she never contacted me. I left voice mail for her, and also sent text to her phone but no reply. I talked with her one time in person she said with all my experience I could get a job at some other place. Not sure what is up with her but it breaks my heart, I lost all my time I had with the company. Told that GM and her my old GM would give good feed back about me. Where I moved there isn't really any jobs here except fast food and they only pay min. wage so really needed the job at Walmart. I applied at other Walmart's over an hour away and got email for meet and greet so I know it's just that manager at this Walmart in this town who is not approving me for work. I miss the closeness I had with my coworkers at Sam's and was looking forward to the same at Walmart. I don't know is she is not willing to hire me because I'm 64 or if she feels like I have too much experience with the company. Thought about contacting corp. office about it, but not sure it would do any good.

Essentially, the two previous replies are correct. From a home office perspective, if you apply for the position at the new location and get an opening there, all you have to do is let the old store know when your last day will be. For hourly store associates, there’s no “time in position” requirement. Whoever told your mom that is either misinformed or making up policy.

She needs to contact the store she wants to go to. Her current store can not stop her from transferring once she's been accepted by the other store. We had a store manager that would do everything in her power to stop people from transferring out of her store because she didn't want to deal with training someone new. Eventually everyone stopped asking her if they could transfer and just went to the other store to be accepted, then she couldn't stop them. She can also put in for a critical need transfer and they can not deny it. Yes, walmart is scandalous. They will hold you back for their own gain.

No, maybe they’re telling her that because they can’t replace her or they want to try to coach her to the point where she can’t transfer.
