I’ve heard rumors for a while that KAM positions will be phased out eventually. Is there any validity to those rumors?

Depends. Some KAMs have 10 accounts and some have 2. The 10 accounters work relentlessly and get paid the least. KAMs have become punching bags for customers and glorified admin people. Management has no idea, but they cannot do their charged tasks because there is zero support around them. Garbage in, garbage out.
No there will always be a need for KAMS. They could consolidate some I guess as some stores get bought out or go out of business but that happens every year for all business
