The company keeps claiming that reductions in force are necessary because we have too many employees, yet we have a bunch of managers with only two or three reports max. Somehow, they are never the ones who are laid off or fired. We could safely get rid of at least two out of three and still have some of them with too few direct reports.

Supervisors and Managers have always been a worthless bunch.

Yes and as a manager with direct reports numbering close to 20 I am pi---d off at all the HR stuff they want me to do. CareerConnect BS may work for those with two direct reports but not those of us with so many. We don’t have time for it.
These low-number managers are too toxic to be exposed to reports more than 2 or 3.
Those reports in turn will be moved to the same positions on Mgr 1's retirement.

Many of these silly manager positions with 2 or 3 direct reports are required to give sponsored employees important sounding titles without exposing their careers to risk of making decisions or accountability.
@OP It’s a form of corporate welfare.
There should be (roughly) one manager for every ten individual contributors, with the exception of very complicated projects or processes. Anything more for day-to-day operations is just self-serving bureaucracy.
@PVA good point this is way out of control in Annandale. Return these employees to a real job contributing to a technical advantage. Do we really need at PHD or masters in a management role, it’s not that difficult. management is tripping over each other here. Wish we had that million back we spent on a walking path....don’t believe the lies.....
The organization I was in, there was an entire layer of management that was a complete waste. Their only purpose was to follow the Department head into meetings and make them feel good about themselves when they said something stupid (which was often).
There appear to be more drastic organizational changes coming. The deck will be reshuffled.
We don’t need that many. Pure and simple. They need to either reduce or return to individual contributor status.
@gwy+1cuGb1Wf You grow up! Please list out other significant and truly value added responsibilities the managers have other than traveling for non value added meetings, ranking people based on favoritism and not absolute contributions, etc.? We like to see. The activities must be value added. Go!
