Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Special treatment

Is anyone hearing of special treatment by those threatening to leave? I have seen some very questionable moves lately: People who were vying for positions for which they probably weren’t the best choice. Then, I hear they are looking outside…..and suddenly they get moved/promoted into that job they wanted.

Maybe reading into it too much, as ExxonMobil moves are often head-scratchers. But if it’s happening, it doesn’t reward complacency.

Actual examples only please.

I was, but the fact is you would have to be pretty d-mb to trust a company in this state to be able to honor something like that for any significant amount of time. I would be lucky if the better position was still there in 12 months.

I believe my manager was sincere in offering but I dont think he really had any way to ensure stability.

Pulling ‘warm bodies’ into management or specialist positions is a completely different story….but is happening too.

Special treatment exists for certain people. Especially for Canada controllers. Example: Two people ask to work remotely: one person is denied and they end up having to resign. The other threatens to quit and they grand the request to remote work and give them a raise during a so called wage increase freeze. Makes no sense. And by the way the person they happily watched walk away had way more experience and contributions to bring to the table.

This is hilarious. I know of at least 6 managers at one gulf site that were total sc--w ups before they were placed into management. Folks that should have been fired but were promoted because they were plugged in. Folks that couldn’t cut it in engineering, failed operations sls and other assorted misfits that failed in their disciplines have been promoted into the sls and department head ranks way before the latest masked layoff scheme. Standard corruption as opposed to to the new lows that they dreamed up with fake ranking to justify they’re numbers.

I’m at a manufacturing site in the US. We had a manager retire and then a train of people get exactly what they wanted. A few were flight risks if they didn’t get the promotion they wanted. I’ve never seen Anything like it before. Mgr retired > dh became mgr > dh moved laterally to other dh > btl to dh > sls to btl > econ to sls > econ to econ > eng to econ

@git: this was true in the old Exxon. Not true in Mobil and not true currently.

@wec: right on the money on Lee! Rex was a total disaster and it was proven from his failure in government. DW is just a Texan pretty boy that was just ushered through plump assignments

Special treatment is given only to special people. We have a couple of managers who quit in the last few months, and also a few tens of regular workers. The bigger boss recognizes this is a problem, but each time he mentions only the name of the managers who left, and it almost brings tears to his eyes. Regular people are just faceless non-entities at his level.

I have yet to see this be true. People won’t remember by the time your next move comes up and if they do, who cares? Might as well leave after using up the last juice

It's never a good idea to threaten to leave or give hints of it. Sure, you might get what you want if you stay but HR and the powers-that-be will mark you. And you will end up leaving after a few months.

@mna It started with Rex Tillerson, who was Lee Raymond’s handpicked successor. So while Raymond was a tremendous CEO the culture of conformity he fostered that resulted in the elevation of yes-men like Rex and DW was probably his worst legacy for EM.

A few years ago before all of this mess I did that, but was very quiet about it. I don’t know exactly how it works these days as I quite like my current position but am sure it can happen.

I got offered a higher position if I stayed, but still left. No mention of salary change. I asked for this position which I was well qualified for a few months before leaving & was declined. Had support from a variety of people in the department during that time. Applied and got multiple offers from tech and left. Turned in notice, and tons of messages about new opportunities for me, but by that time I wasn't going back on my offer.

DW is the worse. We came out of the pandemic worse than before. Terrible decisions made which affected our coworkers livelihoods. He is just lining his pockets. (As much as he said it was to help grandma).

Embrace the new culture as we ride into the sunset of this once great company.

LMAO what they don’t realize is that it’s too late for people considered a flight risk, that’s why you are seeing people quit after 1 month into the job!!!

Yes my manager told me I was passed over for a certain job by someone who was considered a flight risk. They were worried the person would leave if they didn’t get this job.

I gave my notice 2 months ago, and a day later my manager notified me my target role was available if I stayed. I got the impression that my manager was happy for me finding a better spot, but was forced to ask by people higher up. Still left the company.
