Is it possible that NS is hiring new people with little skills while some employees who are furloughed do not have the opportunity to return?
It is the ultimate expression of disrespect for people who might have even returned to this desperate company to which they were loyal and in which they worked hard. NS is becoming more miserable every day.

You must be from portsmouth
Furloughed Dec 29, 2020. 13 yr Machinist. Since then been called 7 times to come back as a Laborer after we trained that craft to do our jobs for less pay...and yes IAM gave no resistance. Was called Friday to come back as a Machinist...no way! New job is $11/hr less, no stress, family life is quite nice now! If you want to work in an absolute miserable environment, work sick, no weekend off days and have no Union representation in a closed shop, give these guys a try. You and your family's mental, physical and emotional health means nothing to management. The pay and retirement are not worth it. I truly did enjoy being a Machinist and took pride in our work/Craft, NS just sucked the life outta me...
wouldn't be the last time either
wouldn't be the first time
Who cares
Everyone has the opportunity to return, wanting to return after securing another job with better hours maybe slight less pay (but about the same due to not paying railroad retirement) is another. The toxic environment at this company is unreal, you can’t trust anyone. New employees have no idea the sh-t show they’re walking into.
I recieved a certificate letter from them offering me my job back. I gave them several years and was furloughed twice. I had 10 days to respond. I just laughed at them and said No!! I've moved on and my family life is much better.
