Thread regarding Allstate Corp. layoffs

Detroit SCO

What in the world is going on? So many attorneys left within last two months and leadership is nonexistent. Support staff leaving in droves. Lead counsel does not make themselves available when attorneys need them for anything. Frustration is rampant amongst everyone. Is it like this at other SCOs? I need to look for a new job. Save your snarky comments.

As someone working there, I know the leads don’t do sh-t and this has caused issues with attorneys and staff. The staff aren’t held responsible for anything and the burden falls on the attorneys. I’m looking for a new job and can’t wait to get the he-l out of this mismanaged cesspool of a legal office.

To the question: How many managers do you know in any line of work that, in addition to managing, do the same work as the people they're managing?

Answer: Partners in law firms. They are the ones who clean up the messes made by staff counsel offices, because the managers are so busy with their file reviews and spreadsheets that they have forgotten what it's like to practice law.

How many managers do you know in any line of work that, in addition to managing, do the same work as the people they're managing? That's not what a manager does. Should we assign some files to Harold, Gerard and Rhonda too while we're at it?

You don't have to continue to do the work of the people you're managing to understand what they're facing on a daily basis, you just have to talk to them and listen to what they have to say.

While it is apparently correct that a majority of LCs and SMCs don't have a pending, that does not mean that they "should be managing people, not files, that's how it's supposed to work". A previous HO director wanted LCs to carry a 1/4 caseload, as it kept them in tune with what their attorneys were facing on a daily basis. That was an excellent idea, as a good attorney does not "manage files" but rather practices law - representing insureds and moving cases to resolution, both in and out of court . Sadly the present state of affairs seems to be that the LCs time is spent managing data and blindly following SMCs random process rules, which process rules may or may not be appropriate for that SCO. The LC time does not seem to be spent managing people, and most certainly it is not spent leading people.

To whoever said this, "The Detroit SCO office is the only office in the country where the leads don’t have a case load of their own," that is not true. Majority of LC's and SMC's do not have a pending. LC's and SMC's should be managing people, not files, that's how it's supposed to work. Should the LC's and SMC's help out more when an office is down attorneys due to turnover? Absolutely. Does it happen? Not really. I can think of one LC in my complex that covered a motion hearing a while back and told EVERYBODY about it.

Yes, the leads are MIA and not helping out with the case load. The Detroit SCO office is the only office in the country where the leads don’t have a case load of their own. It is even more dire right now due to the fact that courts are opening up and beginning trials again and each attorney has a huge pending trial calendar and the leads aren’t even assisting with that.

its not just detroit SCO its Michigan.Allstate wont acknowledge that the one state in the US that allows for unlimited lifetime benefits has a mess of claims and mess of abuse.Claims is a revolving door, and I know my SIU colleagues have had it with being considered same as a medpay state.

MI SCO is so overloaded with work I dont see why someone would take the job in first place, the "unanticipated turnover" EB referred to in claims esp applies to Michigan and with attorneys, med claims, and SIU has had people quit or return to old jobs outside or within company because id--ts in mgt dont listen.

Eric, come negotiate the building of a home that Allstate has to review plans, hire contractors, and owns deed to for a quadripelgic vs reading .xls sheets. You couldnt do a MI catastrophic pip claim for a week here youd be LOST.

turnover will continue. Detroit SCO attys see overwork and terrible work conditions, and SIU has those close to retire just hanging on to get the H out.And they are going to plaintiff firms in Michigan so all the unfair claim practices are going to surface in depositions give it time, theyve seen it in files.

but keep ignoring whats been said for years business as usual.
