Measuring success

I retired from IBM a few years ago and the best advice I can give younger people is the same advice I was given in my mid-20s. Success isn’t measured in leaps and bounds. It will be weighed and measured in tiny increments and as long as you do your best and gain more skills by the end of your career you will be content with all that you’ve attained.

Work is an essential part of life but at the end it will not be as important as you might think. It’ll be about how you treated others, your relationships with family and friends etc.,

That runs counter to our cultural icons (at least in the USA)... you know... write a hit song or act in a movie today... and tomorrow you are young, good looking, and rich.

That's the real American Dream... to hit a home run... make one big ki-l... fast... and life is grand from there on out... freedom from the commonwheel, or perhaps as some current artist would put it... "Workin' for a da man is for suckas"... LOL!

Unfortunately... our economic system is designed for something quite the opposite... to extract value from the worker bees for as long as possible, as cheaply as possible.

Which coincidentally is exactly same goal as the co---e's leadership has too... exploit the masses...
