Former OVM here. Get out as soon as you can. If they offer to match an external salary, SAY NO. Unless you have kissed your DVP/DVMs a** long enough to be put in the list to be a STM you will never be promoted. We all know they favorite the ones that can talk eloquently, use the hot words, and present well during calls and national/region visits. Hard work, leadership, and strategic planning will never be enough to get the recognition deserved.
The job market is robust with management and leadership roles. TJX, Amazon, Target, Lowe’s, Walmart, Aldi, and loads of speciality retailers.
Come spring next year OVMs will be demoted to some form of dept managers with the workforce integration.
Run! And don’t look back.
Yes, OVM here, myself and the MBA are having to help run the sales floor, loyalty, etc., on top of everything else we do. Have to close sometimes 2-3 night a week, which means having to still take calls and work on things from home before coming in on the late shift, or coming in early and working long days. I'm over it. Right, try to take PTO and that's a joke. Constant calls from store manager, never stop. Don't answer the phone and you pay for it later. Everyone is overworked but sales managers aren't expected to be ops and administrative, but we have to be sales managers.
We were told we have to work nights now as Ovm's. Really? How much more do you want us to do??? Because CSX can't do their jobs! They sit in the office all day. Then you pull us to other stores to clean them up for visits, where is the reality in that!
Single OVM store. If running everything and trying to hit metrics with no staff isn’t hard enough… also on store executive schedule having EIC shifts running the sales floor. When scheduled off and workload needs to get done it’s the OVM and not the CSXs stepping up. OVMs that actually work with their team and complete workload need to make their schedules based off WLP not a 6 week schedule. Taking PTO is a joke as you just end up working extra hours a different day. Any other OVM assigned EIC sales floor shifts? How many PTO days will you lose this year?
I used to be a district merchant and have been an OVM since the districts were eliminated. The regional who like her Store Managers to be young (even though she certainly isn't), just promoted a twenty something into our store who has two years of experience. She got here and spends most of her day in the office and doesn't have a clue what she's doing. I am on my third interview and will be getting out before holiday receipts, look forward to see how that goes without me working 10 hours a day.
The OVM’s I know are MISerable. These are experienced smart talented people who got forced into OVM positions.. Two finally quit. They were both long term and dedicated Macy’s employees but had had enough. Others feel stuck and so overworked. It’s not a healthy environment. I’ve been with Macy’s since 1995 and I know retail has changed, but Macy’s stores are so sad…..very poor leadership, poor standards of service and very weak presentation. Added to that is the new people being hired are totally oblivious as to how a good store environment should be. Ignorance is bliss.
Also, make sure your store compensating you fairly properly.
Tonight I just found out my peer is getting paid $4K more than I am.
They left their insite up and I saw they received a “annual incentive” on their ‘Compensation Summary Statement’ to the tune of an extra $4k.
Although it's only for this year and is not apart of their base salary I'm still annoyed what the he-l was all the talk about everyone getting a flat rate increase.
I have been there and done that! All I can say is get out while you can. They will keep taking from you until you are so broke down and then kick you to the curb. There will never be work life balance as long as you are with Macy's. I have worked for many retailers, but none as toxic as them. This will become a vicious cycle for you and it really does start to effect your health and well being.
That's absolutely disgusting you have to be a sales manager, too, on top of everything else you have you do in your actual job. Loyalty ? Wow.
Hence why I stepped down and took a $$$$ cut! I couldn’t be happier!!!
I can’t imagine being a single store OVM! Like I said, I only have 2nd floor and I work 10-11 hours everyday. Some weeks 6 days. I only have 2 FT support. I’m behind on floor moves, dock is about to explote with stock, and Xmas around the corner. Plus just like you we have to help the bigger door set up
You should try being in a single OVM store. We have to run the whole building and send people to help get stores with two OVM's ready for regional visits. Nobody realizes how much workload there is, nobody cares. So many conference calls and now we are hearing that we will have to fly to Chicago to help more stores with multiple OVM's to setup for the holidays in the middle of peak receipts next month. Who do they think is running our stores? We used to have two OVM's and three merchant leads, now we only have stock people who make so little that they can go anywhere to get a job in our market.
Get out now!! It’s just going to get worse and the company will take ur last breath!! There is too much opportunity out there with less stress, more money and appreciation for their employees.
