Imagine the success the company would be having if the talented stayed and the slackers left.

that's why you don't RSVP. And if they call or ping to ask "why?", use one of the responses below (free of charge). Depends on how honest or polite you want to be.

  • I sleep during those hours.
  • I don't think those meeting times are reasonable.
  • Why are you scheduling meetings that early/late?
  • Get a life!

Not attending meeting is taken seriously as they will escalate and make you attend more meeting to find out why you are not able to attend or to make you say will attend

GF dynamic (Fab8 edition)

  • more work for the people that remain
  • limited backfills due to cash crunch/staying lean for IPO
  • people burnout, want to leave, and/or performance suffers
  • less work gets done
  • piles of work stress out people
  • 40-60% of each day is meetings
  • work-life balance is non-existent

from personal experience: putting in >50hr weeks doesn't eventually reduce workload, it just opens you to a continuous flow of work. And when you draw the line and reduce your hours to protect your mental health the flow of work doesn't slow down. Mind you, I shared all of this with my manager who makes futile attempts to distribute the work in my team, but everyone else is in the same position.

Also, I remember something from one of Tom's first all-hands meetings when he was still GM at F8, on work-life balance -- "I'm not going to tell you how many hours you should work". Then he went on about what it takes to keep up with competitors in Asia.

btw if anyone schedules a meeting at 6am or 11pm and it's not with someone from APAC or one-off/exceptional, please quit. Tip for anyone dealing with those psychopaths: just don't attend the meeting -- don't even RSVP. Nothing will happen to you. GF is so starved of talent you have the leverage in sh---y situations like that.

Some old folks who got kids settled feeling bored in the morning schedules call at 6 AM or not getting sleep schedules call at 11 pm without understanding basic working hours.

People with small kids unable to manage work life balance will obviously leave company.
