Got pipped in late July & took the PIL and left the company - got a job offer today at a company in Houston I’m not super interested in and pays ~$15K less than Exxon. I’ve mostly been applying to jobs near my hometown city on the east coast but being a bit more selective to get something I’d actually want (in other words will likely take a bit longer to land an offer). Main question is if I accept this job in Houston solely for financial reasons will it be frowned upon by other places that I’m applying literally right after starting somewhere & will it hurt my resume in the future to have worked somewhere only for like 4-5 months? Might be a d-mb question but just want some insight since I’m not too experienced (1.5years with Exxon) thanks!

I wouldn't be concerned too much unless you do this repeatedly. One or two short tenures can show that if it isn't a good fit that you will move on. This should be a positive and not a negative. All employments of 6 months shows you're unemployable. One or two shows they won't have to fire you if it isn't a "fit"
You don't have to disclose all your previous work experience. Nobody will ask questions regarding your 4-month gap in your resume.
If I were the interviewer, it would have been a flag. Everything equal I would have selected the other candidate. But it would not have been a deal ki---r.
@1oth+1cKTNFcc And do you regret it?
I came to XOM after just spending 6 months at a previous employer. Of course, the question came up as to why I was looking to move so soon, but like you it was mostly for personal reasons to get closer to family. Interviewer understood and it wasn't a big deal.
Do what’s best for you and no people will not care if you explain to them why you want to move out of Houston and Texas.
Prospective employers will definitely ask you why but as long as you provide them valid reasons, it's not a big deal.
If you can stay there for at least 6 months I feel that would be less of a red flag. That’s like the bare minimum before you can say it just wasn’t the right fit.
Do what’s best for you and your financial situation - companies don’t give a damn about you as you probably saw when being shown the door at Exxon
If you’re worried about that you can simply leave that other job off your resume in the future if you do end up finding something else that quickly
