Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

This should apply to everybody

When does L3/L2 management get held to the same PIP / MRLP criteria of 8-10%.

This has to be asked again and again and again. This is where the real fat is and this is what would provide the most savings while affecting the operations and productivity the least. This is exactly what XOM needs.

Start with PIPing the EMIT VP who, in a global forum with 3K attendees, said "If you want to be the next hot shot at Google making 3 times your salary, good luck." Now, that's excellent leadership, inspiration and appreciation.

They are the most glossy, but definitely not the brightest. In fact, fly on the wall in some strategic meetings, and the things said are soooo factually incorrect I want to run for the hills. (It’s even sadder when they defend wrong statements, tooth and nail, because their ego is in it.). Being a good engineer 20 years ago does not qualify anyone to make strategic business decisions.

EM, like many American corporations, is run like an autocratic state. Seems to be against the ideal of a free and democratic society. Why? Any thoughts? Anyone has a story to tell where lower level challenges higher level successfully (and rewarded)?

STCs are divas, fighting for any sort of recognition and are just puppets for management to do their dirty work. Recall a few years ago they were the biggest road block for my team in getting real technical work done, always wanting to be involved in “workroom workshops.” Favorite quote of mine from one of them, “I’m going to be an a$—ole to your team in those workshops!” They couldn’t stand new technical work and had to squash any ideas and make it their own to send up the line to management. Today, I don't think they’d be able to do real technical work at all. Send them packing…

Too many STCs in upstream. In 2016/17 there were over 100. This needs to be reduced to under 50. Most are ranked poorly in the CL 30-32 group and most are white males so many will be forced out over next 3 years.

Sorry guys and gals. The answer in the question is simply never. The priority in EM is to fill the management positions and the only way you get out of there is a controls violation or a major sc--w up. In the second case they will turn you into STC. Otherwise, STC’s are just the teacher’s pets.

Don't worry the axe is coming to upper level management. These jokers who were riding high and felt untouchable not too long ago are now scrambling to create a Linkedin profile and network.

One minor problem they face -- what real skill set have they gained that anyone would want to hire them?

I have always wondered about that too. There are plently of slackers at the L3/L4 level.

Totally agree on STCs. Just a bunch of management material desperately squeezing themselves into a (high-paying) position officially labeled as “technical”. Their only concern is to guess what the big bosses would want to see and twist the information accordingly. Most of the time it involves strangulating any original ideas and instead pushing whatever half-baked opportunity is perceived as favored at the top.
From one generation to the other, they also got less knowledgeable and more disgustingly agressive.

Disagree on STCs. Not much help just game players too. We managed to find and produce plenty of oil and gas prior to the intro of the position in 2007. Most technical people left behind know what they are doing.

Problem is the measurement criteria are way too skewed towards management dimensions, and the assessment groups are based on CL rather than position. Until those elements change, there will never be a true “MLRP” for Management.

Supervisors and managers will be the last people voted off the island because they are ranked above the staff and are buddies with the people making the pip decisions. Ranking is mostly a popularity contest. As for the STCs, now that we have lost all our experience maybe we need them more than in the past. If I was building an oil company I would start with seasoned folks, then all the checkers and babysitters wouldn't be needed.

I agree and would include fls too. Most of them haven't done technical work in years and supervising 5 experienced technical folks who know more than them. Need only one manager for 10 technical folks and then VP. Save a ton. And don't forget the 12 Geoscience STC and principals. We are only op drilling in Brazil, Guyana, Permeian and Sakahlin. Really need that much "help"?
