Poor sales lead to more store closures

James Daunt is planning to close underperforming stores as well as some of bigger urban stores. Sales have not been coming back as hoped and the inevitable closings are scheduled after the new year.

Employees are complaining about how badly they get paid at B&N on the FB booksellers page. I have to ask, why are you still working for such a bad company who doesn't care about you?

" . . . the Daunt plan is a disaster. Ask the store teams who are charged with executing the plan. It’s not working."

Somebody's lying because Daunt said this in Publisher's Weekly . . .

It's pretty easy to tell which stores will be on the chopping block. Our store's sales have never bounced back and most likely never will. Times have changed and people are shopping online and buying cheaper. People aren't reading, they're on the cells and watching Netflix. There is no way the company can continue to pay these rents with business so bad. Just ask your store manager for sales numbers, if they don't tell you, do yourselves a favor a find a better job now.

Because if you don't, it'll suck to find out you're locking the doors for good when you go in on a Monday morning.

There is nothing basic or retail 101 with B&N. Sales are plummeting and the Daunt plan is a disaster. Ask the store teams who are charged with executing the plan. It’s not working.

Wow! Closing stores in January/February….

Tell me a situation in most retail organizations that this does NOT happen?!? It’s called year end organization/stabilization. EVERY retail company does this.

So yes. 15-20 stores WILL shutter early next year. I cannot tell you which ones and I cannot tell you if more will follow, but this is just basic retail 101, they close underperforming stores or leases that are too much.
