Please Extend WFH

With the rise of the delta variant in Houston, why hasn’t the company allowed WFH full time again?

My job is 24-7 whether I’m in the office or not. For those of us who don’t switch off in the non-core hours, WFH is a blessing. It’s much more palatable to be available for work any time I’m needed if I can also be available for home needs sometimes during core hours.

What you describe is the typical day several ago for most professionals who were actually generating value for the company. Most non value adding technician type people never thought about the company as soon as they got on the elevator and were out the door.

When I work in the office I put my 9 hours in and go home and forget work. When I work from home I login at 6am and usually logoff at 6pm or 6:30pm. It seems like the day never ends, and people are sending emails and request all the way to the end. So maybe being in the office is not so bad. In the office no one ever comes by or in my office, so I hardly ever get verbal request. In the office many start to head out at 3:00, so the work naturally starts slowing down. At home it is hard to logoff after 9 hours.

No no no, gotta have butts in seats for... reasons.

Not sure why it matters which chair my a-s is in if I'm sitting in front of a computer all day regardless. I get more work done from home. My job doesn't require me to be in other people's faces all day.

What the heck is going on at Oxy now. Two years ago it was much better run. Much tighter in terms of policy and procedures. I am very disappointed.

In my group (land) we were told we could stay at home until 09/07, but we all know that the ones who do that will be on a black list from management, so many of us didn’t want to risk it.

The comments on this post show just how terribly disjointed Oxy’s approach was when it came to returning to work. Some groups were told come back 6/1, no questions. Many others were told 9/7. Why the mixed messaging???

The 99% survival rate is true but even if you survive you may be dealing with covid long after you recover.

Survival is all relative:
You still could have long-lasting symptoms, and the possibility of being sick for weeks or months in the hospital - then paying thousands in hospital bills. Insurance premiums might be affected? I'm more terrified of hospital debt - hahah

Will you be able to work after you recover? How much time can you take off work?

At the very least, the vaccine gives me peace of mind, that if I get COVID, I am reducing my chance of ending up at the hospital where they can charge you $51,000 to $78,000 for covid treatments. I guess my point is it's too expensive to get sick and the vaccine is free- that's a no-brainer to me.

also...
The vaccine is about reducing the risk of death or severe symptoms.

The ratio is that 1 in 500 people have died from Covid - that is significant enough to want to reduce that number.

Only special ones get to WFH until Sept 7th. Most of us are in the get back to the office June 1st category. For the person below that wants to stay home until kids can be vaccinated you are not living in the present. If workers stay home with kids until they can be vaccinated then so should people who have issues taking the vaccine, spouses who can't take the vaccine, and so on. It has to be more of a policy that covers more than just little kids. Daycares are open and accepting all ages of kids now, so you choice is really a personal choice.

Dear Math Hurts, the point isn’t that losing 3.3MM people isn’t sad. It is terrible. But, the point is that if you have a 99% chance of success in anything, those are excellent odds. I’ll take a 99% chance every time. It is ridiculous to change your life, to wear a mask, to quarantine at home, to cry about WFH, when you have a 99% chance of survival. If you are afraid of the 1% failure then you should never get in a car, eat in a restaurant, ride a roller coaster, go anywhere or do anything; just huddle in your house with your cats and mutter to yourself. Further, if you are vaccinate, then we’re talking about 99.9999% chance of being just fine.

I dont get it.

Anyone can wfh permanently until September 7th. Are your managers saying otherwise? Lots of people in my BU have not been back to the office and it’s ok

We should be allowed optional wfh until young children can get vaccinated. Even though I’m vaccinated, I don’t want to be a risk to my family members who can’t be vaccinated when I can perform my duties equivalently or better from home.

Sure you can work from home all you want but not on Oxy work. You can mow the lawn, clean the dishes, mop the floor, dust, and all of that other stuff. Good luck.

You see what is going on in New York. Those that are not vaccinated are going to lose a lot of freedoms such as eating out, etc. Govt is going to make it where you either get the shot, or you will be an outcast. Don't ki-l the messenger, but it is coming.

To the blithering id--t that posted
COVID = 99% survival rate
I’ll add 330 million US citizens * (1-0.99)= 3.3 million dead US citizens
Think before you post or do us all a favor and join the latter group.

Ron Swanson you said it all, so I won’t say it. Microsoft has come out and said all their employees will have to be vaccinated. It is not about politics as I am conservative and got the shot as soon as I could, and I know many like me that did the same. The President just said on TV this has now become a pandemic of the un-vaccinated, and in this case he is right. If one can’t get it because of medical reasons they need to work from home to protect them. It is not their fault, and they should not suffer. Staying at home protects them and us at work.

Maybe this makes more sense...Getting the vaccine is risk mitigation. You are getting the vaccine to reduce your risk and or likelihood that you will contract the virus or have severe symptoms that land you in the hospital and rack up hospital bills. Personally, I'd rather get the dang shot and not have to deal with paying any crazy medical bills. Also, getting sick reduces company productivity rate and increases liability. It's bad for businesses to have a covid outbreak at work. It's simple risk vs. benefit.

The fact that you can still contract the virus with the vaccine is irrelevant it's about reducing risk of death. Any excuse you have other than a legitimate medical issue is just making you sound like a mo--n or a conspiracy nut.

Texas is a right-to-work state - so you don't agree with safety protocols set find a job somewhere else - don't complain, it works both ways.

Getting an emergency use vaccine to reduce the spread of a deadly virus to protect your community is brave and patriotic. Unfortunately, that is a risk not everyone is willing to take... at least we know half of the country are not willing to step up and take a chance for the greater good... good to know. So tired of entitled, whiney, people inventing problems. Stop your bi----n' get the vaccine and we can all go back to making money. You wanna talk about snowflakes - talk about a damn role reversal suck it up and take care of your sh-t.

So what will you do during normal cold and flu season? Stay at home and hide? The only reasonable way forward is to have those not wanting the vaccine and who can medically get the vaccine either get the vaccine or resign. We don’t want you here anyway with that attitude.

I use to think since I was vaccinated it was okay to go into the office. My mind has totally changed on that now, and if we are going to have unvaccinated in the office none of us should go back. With the breakthrough cases the vaccinated are not protected from what I am understanding. Don't give me that line, if you have the vaccine you want die. Guess what? I don't want Covid whether I die or not, so I have no desire to be around others that have not been vaccinated. It is there right to not be vaccinated, but I like my chances around those that have been vaccinated. So the company needs to do something to protect all of us, so that should be WFH. Also, if you think the masks are protecting you then you are wrong. You would need an N95 for full protection, and breathing in one of those is a chore in itself. Cloth and fabric masks are totally useless in fending off Covid. I really don't mind being back in the office, but we need a strong push on getting people vaccinated.
