Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Military analog

I hate to burst your bubbles, but all this great training you claim to have gotten with the Double Cross, is not great training. I worked midstream before it was called midstream, retired, and went back to midstream. I would never had gotten a job post retirement if I had never branched out of the XOM mold. XOM training is good only for XOM. Like the Army, there's the Army way. You learn to manage other contractors and follow processes and that's about all. Calculating, with the exception of a few specialists, cannot be done by the majority to make a sound decision. I know you may have sensed that if you are out looking for a new job. One company I interviewed with actually said they do not follow the XOM model, in order to entice new hires, as bragging rights.

You can't apply what you learned at XOM? BS.

If you were a good employee who had issues (personal crisis / misunderstood / etc), you should be able to see where XOM is good and where it is bad. You should understand what you would do differently and the same if you really had a say in how it was run. You should be able to see waste, inefficiency, and good and bad processes.

Many PIP/PIL people are actually good employees who are misunderstood.

Was I always a good employee at XOM? No. Did Exxon ever forgive me when I finally was a good employee? No, I received a PIL offer after busting it for a year and a half.

Would I hire me at the point XOM let me go? Absolutely. And lucky for me, I was out of my depression and had recovered my self esteem when they offered to let me beg for 3 months. Forget 'em.

If you get a PIL, take it and run.

Life is too short.

Different struggles now, but I'm respected for what I offer now.

And I absolutely understand what Exxon did well and what it totally failed at. I now work for a "minor."

XOM will never outperform these people.

Go ahead and think your skills don't transfer. Shame on you if true.

Biggest difference between EM and Military is the military has an “up or out” system for performance management and EM doesn’t do enough “out”

Military at least emphasizes honesty and ethical behavior. EM may have a severe lack

I'd say this gentleman is spot on. Honing marketable and satisfying skills outside limits Company requirements takes extra effort.
